Quinta do Boição 2006 Escolha Red (Estremadura)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Escolha in Portuguese indicates an aged wine, and this solid, chunky red has obviously softened by wood and bottle aging. It has a velvet, warming texture, its black plum and berry fruits smoothing out the tannins. There is a great burst of juicy acidity to finish. Delicious to drink now, but worth aging.  — R.V.  (8/1/2009)

DFJ Vinhos 2007 Grand’Arte Shiraz (Estremadura)

  • Best Buy
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $11
Its dark color promises power, and this wine delivers a broad, chunky Shiraz, with perfumed fruit, dark tannins and a spicy wood structure. Solid concentration gives a wine that somehow manages to assimilate a Franco/Australian variety into a dry Portuguese structure.  — R.V.  (8/1/2009)

Made from Alvarinho grapes in the cool region north of Lisbon, this wine brings out surprising tropical characters in the grape. There is light acidity, but the texture is creamy, with suggestions of wood to go with the delicious lime and mango flavors.  — R.V.  (12/15/2009)

DFJ Vinhos 2007 Quinta do Rocio Red (Estremadura)

  1. $18
A new brand from an old estate for DFJ Vinhos, Rocio is powerfully dark colored, complex and concentrated. Tannins are contained within a structure that is initially severe and then round out into juicy black currant flavors, always tempered with firm tannins.  — R.V.  (8/1/2011)

Quinta de Chocapalha 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah (Estremadura)

  1. $22
With its addition of 10% Syrah, this is a deliciously rounded wine, the Cabernet firmness mellowed into mature, ripe fruit. The acidity gives it shape, the tannins act as a focus for the rich fruit.  — R.V.  (12/15/2007)

DFJ Vinhos 2005 Grand’Arte Alicante Bouschet (Estremadura)

  1. $16
The juiciness of Alicante Bouschet shows well in this full-bodied wine, packed with black berries and soft tannins. The dry finish suggests some aging—maybe 1 year.  — R.V.  (12/15/2007)
