Remhoogte 2003 Estate Wine Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $28
The estate wine from Remhoogte in which Michel Rolland is both consultant and partner. This Bordeaux Blend is serious stuff with dry tannins that promise good aging. There is some Pinotage in the blend, but it is hardly noticeable; the main flavors come from the textured cassis of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011
It’s really a shame that only 25 cases of this wine were imported, as it’s a fantastic Cab that’s sure to compare favorably to some of your favorites. Black currant leaf, fennel, crushed violet and dried tobacco are intricately woven into the dark fruit aromas. The medium-weight mouth has a texture like crushed velvet, with firm tannins and assertive flavors of…  — L.B.  (3/1/2011)

Kanonkop 2007 Paul Sauer Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $43
Balanced and forward with enticing notes of cedar and smoked meat among aromas of mulled blackberries and licorice. Lush dark black fruit floods the velvety mouth, while tobacco and sweet spice linger through the lengthy close. Drink now through 2014.  — L.B.  (6/1/2011)

Rustenberg 2006 Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $49
Earthy notes of fresh whole tobacco leaf, licorice and vanilla bean spice up the blackberry and cassis fruit on the nose and palate. The velvety mouthfeel is loaded with dusty, fine-grain tannins, with a lifting acidity that keeps the long, cedary finish fresh and vibrant. Ready to drink now, but should also keep nicely for another 2–4 years.  — L.B.  (3/1/2012)

Morgenhof 2001 Premiere Selection Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $35
A classic Bordeaux blend, dominated by 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, Premiere Selection is a ripe wine, layered with sweet fruit dominating firm tannins. Despite those tannins, the big fruit flavors mean the wine is ready to drink now.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Muratie 2007 Ronnie Melck A Tribute Shiraz (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $60
A worthy tribute, this dark and concentrated Shiraz oozes rich fruit notes of mulled boysenberry, blackberry and cherry all dusted with cocoa powder, whole baking spice and tree bark. Big and gripping with assertive tannins and a firm structure, this is one that should age nicely; try after 2014.  — L.B.  (3/1/2012)

Muratie 2006 Ronnie Melck A Tribute Shiraz (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $60
With 16 months spent in 100% new French oak, this is a powerhouse of a wine. At first a bit overripe on the nose with notes of berry jam, kirsch, cigar box spice and a hint of smoke, the mouth shows similar concentrated dark fruit flavors but is lifted by supporting acidity, aggressive tannins and a tight structure. Dark chocolate-covered roasted espresso beans…  — L.B.  (9/1/2010)

Delheim 2001 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
A Cabernet-dominated (98%) wine, which boasts a dense, concentrated tannic structure. Flavors of cassis underly this, while the wood spices contribute their ribbon of flavor. This is an impressive wine, the flagship red from this estate founded by Spatz Sperling over 30 years ago.  — R.V.  (12/22/2011)
