Rijk's Private Cellar 2003 Chenin Blanc (Tulbagh)

  1. $35
Wood and Chenin Blanc can go together, if handled judiciously, as this fabulous wine shows. Nuts and almonds make classic mature Chenin Blanc aromas, while the dense ripe fruit flavors with a complex interplay between wood and fruit give this wine great depth. Imported by wine@34south.  — R.V.  (11/15/2005)

Rijk's 2007 Private Cellar Reserve Chenin Blanc (Tulbagh)

  1. $60
Though the fruit is starting to fade on this mature Chenin, it’s drinking quite beautifully now with rich notes of fresh butter, baked apple, clove-spiced orange and yellow florals on the nose. Peach pit, honeydew and orange oil flesh out the mouth, but the acid cuts through the weight and provides a clean cut to the spice-infused finish. Drink now.  — L.B.  (11/1/2011)

Rijk's 2007 Reserve Pinotage (Tulbagh)

  1. $75
With only 20 cases imported, this will be a tough find but it’s certainly well worth the hunt. This high-end Pinotage is lush and creamy, the oak-driven notes of dark chocolate and smoky cigar spice fusing seamlessly with the damson plum and dark berry preserve fruit center. Though dense and powerful, the long finish is surprisingly vibrant and spicy all at once.  — L.B.  (11/1/2011)

Saronsberg 2008 Full Circle Red (Tulbagh)

  1. $42
This Shiraz-based blend—with splashes of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier—is lush and rich, with notes of ripe blackberry, cherry and strawberry preserves backed by hints of fruit-cake spice and black pepper. The plush mouthfeel boasts similarly concentrated dark-fruit flavors, and the finish boasts a decadent fudgy chocolate note that shows good staying power…  — L.B.  (5/1/2013)

Rijk's 2006 Private Cellar Pinotage (Tulbagh)

  1. $55
With a satiny texture and softened tannins, this is a well-balanced Pinotage that’s ready for enjoyment now. Brambly dark berry, Asian spice and sweet mesquite smoke all abound on the nose and mouth, while the long finish carries the charred woody edge even further.  — L.B.  (11/1/2011)

Rijk's 2009 Touch of Oak Chenin Blanc (Tulbagh)

  1. $30
The touch of oak that’s promised on the label is delivered with subtle hints of almond and dusty spice. Otherwise, the wine is fresh and lively with assertive and zippy notes of green plum and underripe tropical fruit, all of which carry through to the mouthwatering finish. Drink now.  — L.B.  (11/1/2011)

Rijk's Private Cellar 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon (Tulbagh)

  • Online Exclusive
This is cool climate Cabernet, ripe but relatively delicate, with just a herbaceous touch. The texture is dry, firm, with structured tannins. It leaves an aftertaste of aciditity.  — R.V.  (12/22/2011)

Rijk's 2007 Estate Syrah (Tulbagh)

  1. $80
There’s a lot of earthy spice character to this wine, as assertive aromas of purple florals, whole cinnamon stick, nutmeg and clove are supported by a frame of small forest berries. Medium weight and round on the palate with a mulled boysenberry-flavored finish.  — L.B.  (3/1/2012)
