At 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, this is a bit like a Catalan super Tuscan. Unusual for the region because you can really pick up on the Cabernet component. Overall it’s spicy, with hints of tomato, herb and pepper along with textured dark fruit. Good for the money; drink now. Imported by European Cellars.

Subtle and balanced, and may show best with plenty of airing and/or decanting. In the meantime, expect modest plummy sweetness with a smack of herbal offset. It’s more simple and statuesque than lively or attention-grabbing. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection; Imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines.

Very big, modern, sweet and oaky. And that doesn’t mean it’s bad, because the richness, high alcohol (15%), buttery barrel notes and candy-like qualities are all rendered well. Still, be on the watch for creamy oak, cinnamon, café mocha and butter more than precise, angular fruit character. Should get more integrated with another year of bottle age. The boisterous…

Sweet, dark and ripe, with prune on the nose along with smoke and tar. With a smooth body and easy tannins, this is a ready Syrah-led blend with blackberry, pepper, licorice and chocolate notes but also a slash of obvious but nicely applied oak. Drink now through 2010.

A big, warm, baked wine made from Merlot, Garnacha, Syrah and Cab Sauvignon. It has baked aromas in front of a full, balanced palate that hits with dark fruit, molasses and warmth. Does a good job of blending ripe black fruit and chocolate with proper tannins and acidity. Drink now.

Tight aromas of cherry and cassis come with orange peel and licorice scents. It feels edgy and acidic on the palate, but there’s enough body and fruit to absorb the acids. Tastes like schisty licorice, black fruits and spice, with a choppy, tannic, medium-long finish. Drink this Syrah-Carignan blend now.

Roasted plum, baked berry and jammy aromas can’t be missed, but it’s structured and not at all soft in the mouth, with wild berry, cherry and boysenberry flavors. It really pours on the fruit, ending fresh with no nonsense.

Gritty aromas of olive, herbs and charred berry give this Montsant wine a Chilean-like bouquet. The palate is wide, blunt and tannic, with blackberry and stewed plum flavors. It mellows out on the finish, with earth notes. It’s solid and sturdy, but feels tough. A blend of Garnacha, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
