Aloja 2010 Red (Montsant)

  1. $14
Jammy berry, light mint and herb notes carry a jumpy nose to a palate that has oak-infused plum, raspberry and light herb flavors. It finishes mostly calm and collected, but also a touch racy, with a pastry flavor.  — M.S.  (10/1/2012)

Acústic 2010 Vinyes Velles Nobles Garnatxa-Carinyena Red (Montsant)

  1. $20
Mineral-driven and hard on the nose, this features toasty, smoky, chocolaty notes in addition to medicinal berry aromas. It feels juicy but also resiny and creamy, with plum and wood flavors that finish long. This is a ripe, fruity wine with plenty of oak, size and body.  — M.S.  (12/31/2012)

Fra Guerau 2006 Rosé (Montsant)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $14
Spicy strawberries on the nose lead straight to a full-bodied, totally balanced and healthy palate that is eager to deliver zesty raspberry and tea-like flavors. Not hard to enjoy, with peppery rosé tannins and good length. Freshness is key to this wine, and as of June 2007 it was drinking perfectly. Imported by Freixenet USA.  — M.S.  (12/15/2007)

Gran Vinaio 2007 Grenache (Montsant)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
A bit hard and leathery smelling, but there’s enough cedar and smoky darkness to the nose that it invites you in. The palate is tight and drying, with earthy, slightly herbal flavors of spiced red berry. Short on fruit come finishing time but showing length, juicy acidity and structure.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

El Raval 2010 Grenache-Carignan (Montsant)

  1. $13
Rubbery dark-berry aromas yield to earth, leather and chocolate scents upon airing. This feels healthy and standard, with full-force flavors of medicinal berry. It’s tight, fresh and slightly resiny on the finish, despite having spent only three months in oak. A blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Carignan.  — M.S.  (12/31/2012)

Joan D'Anguera 2002 la Planella Red (Montsant)

  1. $19
Saturated and dense, but youthful as well as a few shades shy of refined. There’s herbal essence to the flavor profile, but there’s also bold and tasty cassis and black plum. The finish is chewy and a bit spicy, and overall you’d have to label it rich and full.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)

Fra Guerau 2002 Red (Montsant)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
This well-priced red from Tarragona shows a glimpse of what the Montsant region can produce. The nose is all red fruit, with a splinter of oak. The palate is chunky and easy as it deals blackberry and raspberry in spades. Chocolate and mocha on the thick finish should please the sugar mavens.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Cellers Sant Rafel 2003 Solpost Red (Montsant)

  1. $25
Translucent in color, yet clean and reserved. Aromas of pie cherries and other red fruits are solid, while the red fruit and herb flavors are more than good. If there’s an issue here, it’s that the wine lacks depth and complexity. On the surface it’s satisfying and competent, but among the best wines from Montsant it’s just a face in the crowd. Imported by USA Wine…  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)
