Finca Sandoval 2005 Cuvee TNS Red (Manchuela)

  1. $233
Haul out the superlatives for this trend-setter from the easterly Manchuela section of La Mancha. Not the wine-on-steroids that it could be; TNS, made from Touriga Nacional and Syrah, is elegant, sexy and in total control. Floral berry aromas, delicate raspberry flavors and a smooth, lightly oaked finish all help steal the show. Available only in magnums; awesome…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2004 Syrah (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
There are more similarities than differences among the Griñon varietal roster, but a favorite has to be this dense and meaty Syrah. While not the most sauvage or iconoclastic Syrah on the market, it excels with a delicious plum and berry palate and searing intensity. It’s all fruit and power, but in that style it’s quite something.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2003 Emeritus Red (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $75
Hiding behind Griñon’s impressive 2004s is this ultrapremium blend of Cabernet, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Emeritus is sweet and ripe with pipe tobacco, cassis, spice cake and chocolate aromas. It’s immense and inviting, with grabby, plump blackberry fruit along with cinnamon, mocha and cola notes. Creamy, rich and almost unctuous. Drink over the next five years. 200…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Finca Sandoval 2005 Red (Manchuela)

  1. $53
Ripe, sweet-smelling and “muy moderno,” but by no means is this Syrah-led warrior only fruit, bulk and oak. Spanish wine writer Victor de la Serna’s wine gets better all the time. This vintage is like berry cake in a glass, but it’s not short on anything, including acidity and tannic structure. Expect a blast of fruit flavor, intensity in reserve, and some forward…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2002 Syrah (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $40
Dark and ethereal, with raisin and vanilla on the pitch-black, manly bouquet. One of Spain’s best Syrahs, with dense cherry, raspberry and mocha flavors. It’s lavishly oaked, smooth yet big, and it’s packed to the brim with full tannins and lushness. Drink now or hold. Imported by Moët Hennessy USA.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Earthy, deep and meaty, with rubber and heft to the nose, but also a ton of black fruit. Texturally, it’s like velvet; and the palate is super ripe and lengthy, with flavors of blackberry, mocha, coffee and fine oak. A Syrah-led, full-bodied beauty that’s subtle and not overpowering. Drinkable now but best in about 3-5 years.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Marques de Griñon 2002 Petit Verdot (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $40
Saturated and dark, with black pepper, leather and boysenberry making for a fully pleasing bouquet. Juicy and serious, with berry and cherry fruit flowing on a wave of dense tannins. Finishes long and chocolaty, with a touch of prune. Layered and likable. Imported by Moët Hennessy USA.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Gosalbez Orti 2001 Qubel Barrica Red (Vinos de Madrid)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $47
Pure blueberry and blackberry pour forth from this dark-as-night Tempranillo, one of tiny production made in organic fashion. Wonderful texture, excellent fruit, and a smoky, rubbery finish announce it as a major leaguer. Not overly expansive on the finish, but lovely and serious throughout.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)
