In cooler vintages like 2007, this white blend from Bodegas Naia excels. It gets going with pear, apple and light, leesy aromas in front of a citrusy palate that is a knock-off for varietal Sauvignon Blanc. Flavors of grapefruit, lime and gooseberry should be familiar, and the crisp fresh-lettuce finish is a winner. Good stuff for the money.

Opens with melon aromas, minerality and a flash of sharp citrus. The palate is still lively and pithy, with mango, nectarine, apricot and apple flavors. This wine seems well balanced and refined, but like so many Verdejos from Rueda it’s working on a short lifespan, so catch it now before it fades away.

Peach, melon and apple aromas are more or less what’s left on the nose, and the palate also indicates a fine wine in decline. Nobody will tell you that Verdejo has the stuff for long aging, but Pariente remains a wine of refinement and complexity. So catch it now for the last of its melon, green-fruit and pear flavors, which are backed by a lasting but soft finish.

A barrel-fermented Verdejo, which will work for some and seem wrong to others. The nose is wood-heavy, with smoke, butterscotch and licorice. In the mouth, it’s ripe and full of spiced pear and vanilla flavors. A one-trick pony in that it’s dominated by oak. Still, the quality of the fruit and oak is solid.

Clean, lucid and attractive, with spindly tropical fruit aromas that veer toward mango, pineapple and passion fruit. A complete Verdejo with all the hallmarks Rueda is known for: apricot and peach flavors, nice acidity, and a crisp finish.

Sauvignon Blanc fans take note: this no-oak Verdejo tastes a lot like S.B., with ultrafresh tropical and citrus fruit characteristics that include aromas and flavors of pineapple, grapefruit, passion fruit and nectarine. Extremely lively and appealing, with a good mix of acidity and body. A very good food wine. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

Crisp, green and friendly, with aromas of celery and fairway grass. The palate also has some green to it, namely celery and edamame, but there’s adequate melon and grapefruit to balance things off. The finish is dry and pithy, with a lasting flavor of pink grapefruit. Imported by USA Wine Imports, Inc.

Mineral, cactus, citrus and green herbs share the bouquet, which is followed by a full yet spritzy palate of apple cider and citrus flavors. The slight effervescence makes the wine dance, yet there’s something incongruous about the spritz matched against the natural weight of old-vines Verdejo.
