Numanthia-Termes, S.L. 2003 Termanthia Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $201
Sly in the early innings and then menthol, forest, spice, charcoal and earthy black-fruit aromas emerge to rally this bruiser into its prime, which entails monster fruit flavors, rugged tannins, and a stout, peppery finish. The core power on this wine is beyond reproach. Will cellar nicely for at least five years, possibly more.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)

Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Everything that’s fantastic about 21st-century Toro is encapsulated in this big, intense beauty. Tobacco, vanilla and blackberry aromas grace the forceful but stylish nose, while the palate pulses with toasty blackberry, dark plum, tobacco and chocolaty flavors. Smoky, pure and long on the finish. A hands-down winner to drink now through 2016.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Numanthia-Termes, S.L. 2006 Termanthia Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $200
Termanthia is the pinnacle of Tinta de Toro. Aromas of wild blackberry, crude oil, forest floor and truffles are just now showing themselves, while the tight, tannic palate is full of black plum, blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Espresso and roast meat notes grace the dark, jam-packed finish, and as a whole this is one bold, boisterous wine. Best in 2011…  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Maurodos 2005 San Román Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $67
We would not have expected anything to match the stellar 2004 San Román, but this newest vintage is up to the task. It’s opaque as midnight without a moon, and the nose is a delectable blend of vanilla, spice, hickory, mocha and meaty blackberry. The palate is both magnetic and sly; it pumps black fruit galore, but augments things with controlled chocolate and…  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)

Maurodos 2004 San Román Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
About as good as it gets in terms of a powerful, fully oaked modern wine that still guards its core identity while offering plenty of straightforward drinking pleasure. San Roman in 2004 is a high-speed train with agile fruit and bracing acidity more dominating than, say, tannic might or alcoholic heat. Among the brave new world of modern wines from Toro this is…  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Numanthia-Termes, S.L. 2001 Termanthia Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $175
With this wine the Egurens of Rioja fame have hit the mother lode in Toro. The ’01 version of Termanthia is outrageously powerful and deep, like a shot to the jaw from Lennox Lewis in his prime. It’s maxed out in terms of leather, smoky oak, and depth of fruit. Almost hard to describe, it’s so big and mauling. Hold until at least 2008. 330 cases made.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Teso La Monja 2007 Alabaster Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $250
Make room in the cellar for this heavyweight! Talk about a monster wine; but there’s also finesse, character and style to it. Alabaster is the top wine from the Eguren family’s new Toro winery, and it’s big, tannic and loaded with spice, molasses and syrupy black fruit flavors. Rich, long and fierce on the finish, with tannins and heat to resolve. Best from 2012…  — M.S.  (6/1/2010)

Numanthia-Termes, S.L. 2005 Numanthia Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
Worn leather, hickory and earth scents accent the deep fruit that Numanthia is known for. But it’s the polished mouthfeel and consistent delivery of flavor and texture on this ’05 that distinguishes it from so many big bombers from Toro. By the time it’s done you hardly feel the tannins on the finish, which lingers comfortably for minutes. Excellent wine to drink…  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)
