Northern Spain Wines

Due to the diverse range of microclimates, soils and maturation techniques, there are vast stylistic differences among the wines of Northern Spain. The wines of Spain’s leading red wine region, Rioja DOCa, are constructed predominantly from Tempranillo with smaller percentages of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano to fill out the blend. Classical Rioja yields muted red fruit flavors with accents of vanilla and dried dill due to the time spent in American oak. Southwest of Rioja in the Castilla y León autonomía lies the Ribera del Duero DO, a region characterized by its continental climate and vast diurnal swings. Producing wines that are darker and often more intense than Rioja, Ribera del Duero’s blends must contain a minimum 75% of Tinto Fino (the local clone of Tempranillo) with Garnacha and often a touch of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for added dimension. Nearby, the Toro DO is stylistically similar to Ribera del Duero, offering massive, alcoholic, ripe reds. On the northeastern coast in the autonomía of Catalonia, Spain’s other DOCa wine region, Priorat, produces predominately red wines based on Garnacha and Cariñena. Here, the llicorella soil, a blend of black slate and quartzite, creates wines of impressive power and structure. Grapes grown on Priorat’s precipitous slopes have no trouble ripening: The blistering summer heat can push potential alcohol levels to 18%, if gone unchecked. Spain’s fresh white wines can be found in the northeastern autonomía of Galicía, which boarders Portugal. Here, the cool maritime climate is responsible for producing crisp, peach- and floral-scented wines based on the Albariño varietal. Smells earthy, murky and a little raisiny, and then in the mouth it scratches with grating tannins in support of floral cherry and tart red fruit flavors. Finishes sort of hollow and sour; standard issue at best.  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Earthy, leafy and also damp smelling, with a raisiny quotient. The palate is heavy, with muddled, murky, damp-tasting berry fruit. Peppery and fairly dull on the finish, with a thick, meaty feel.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Altanza 2007 Edulis Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $15
Opens with tinny, clacky aromas that fail to convey clarity. With time it improves, but even then the palate has a grating, choppy feel in support of funky, brambly berry flavors. Finishes hot and oaky, with chippy tartness.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Chunky and soft on the nose, with maderized papaya aromas. The palate is acidic, with racy, sharp apple and citrus flavors. Edgy on the finish, and struggles all the way to achieve balance.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Torres 2008 Ibéricos Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $21
Earthy and briary aromas lack fruit except for a pinch of cherry. The palate is tight and choppy, with herbal, oaky flavors that again show little to no fruit. Dry and lightly toasted on the finish, which is tangy.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Finca La María 2005 Barrica Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Funky and smelling of pine and tarragon. That aromatic sharpness carries straight to the palate, where the feel is narrow and the flavors are short and tangy, with little to no big-time berry fruit. Simply an acceptable underperformer that’s tough and sharp.  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Bodegas Epifanio Rivera 2008 Erial Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $23
Heavily roasted on the nose, with rustic aromas of leather, olive and baked berries. The palate is fiercely tannic and low on sweetness; it runs sharp, lean and salty, with a hollow finish and tang. Two samples tasted.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)
