D.G. Viticultors NV Caligo Essència Sweet White Wine Chardonnay (Spain)

  1. $90
Bold and gold, with penetrating aromas of orange, dried apricots, sweat and honey comb. The feel is rich and layered, with just enough acidity to lend volume to the apricot, dried peach and honey flavors this late-harvest Chardonnay is pushing. Thick and a bit unctuous on the finish; drink now.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

Asensio 2006 Miguel Asensio Vino Dulce de Moscatel (Spain)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $22
Ripe and honeyed, but also nicely balanced by flower blossom aromas and acidic zest on the palate. For straightforward apricot and peach flavors, this wine serves its purpose. It’s smooth, sweet and easygoing, and overall it’s just elegant and lively enough to jostle your palate.  — M.S.  (4/1/2008)

Heretat Montrubí 2004 Gaintus Red (Vino de Mesa)

  1. $49
An obscure Catalonian wine made from indigenous grapes, this pricey oddball starts with bubblegum and candy aromas mixed with smoke and meat. The color is dark and the wine is a bit rough. But in a country, unusual way it redeems itself with zippy cherry flavors and a fresh, tight mouthfeel. Best with food.  — M.S.  (4/1/2008)

Torres 2008 Infinite Tempranillo-Cabernet Sauvignon (Spain)

This new wine from the Torres group is a little heavy and baked on the nose, but once you get it onto the palate there’s depth, mouthfeel and solid flavors of savory fruit, soy, rubber and dark berry. Dry on the finish, with a mounting note of coffee. Not overly fruity or sweet, which may be a blessing for some palates.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Cavas del Ampurdán NV Blanc Pescador White (Spain)

  1. $12
A Lambrusco-like petillant that’s neutral and dry as a bone on the nose except for a pinch of green. The palate has a fine, controlled spritz and lemon-lime flavors. Crisp, citrusy and refreshing, and fairly well executed.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Pinord NV Mediterraneo de Pinord Moscato (Spain)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
Made in the Moscato d’Asti style, with lemon-lime aromas and bubbles akin to Sprite. The palate features high citric acids and foaminess along with tangy lemon-lime and green apple flavors. Good on the finish due to the acidity and good overall for a Spanish version of sparkling Moscato.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

J. Garcia Carrion NV Opera Prima Sparkling Moscato (Spain)

  1. $8
Flowery and sweet smelling, then round and fairly smooth in the mouth. The bubbles and flavor package of tropical fruits galore is pleasant and shouldn’t offend anyone. Finishes clean and easy. A mango boat of flavor.  — M.S.  (2/1/2012)

Merum 2005 Old Vines Grenache-Syrah (Spain)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $16
Plump and full of plum and licorice aromas. Weighs in big and a touch sweet, with black cherry and ripe plum flavors. Very soft in the feel department, with a soft finish that’s like a cushioned fall. Healthy as a whole, with lively tannins.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)
