Bodegas Herederos Ribas 1998 Ribas de Cabrera Red (Vi de Taula de Balears)

  1. $53
The Balearic Islands seem to have what it takes when it comes to fine reds, especially when importer supreme Jorge Ordonez is the one ferreting them out. This three-grape blend is fascinating and flavorful; it has a floral nose, gorgeous plum, berry, vanilla and cinnamon flavors, and a smooth, chocolaty finish. The wine is round, complete and unusual; it’s a real find.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)

Anima Negra 2005 Àn Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
Mature, classy and different than most, with earth, tobacco, warm fruit, baked notes and subtlety to the bouquet. The palate is whole, welcoming and full of baked plum, spice, molasses and leathery, and then it finish long and complex, but a little sweet and rooty. A winner from Mallorca for those seeking something different. Drink now.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Crater 1998 Barrica Red (Tacoronte-Acentejo)

  1. $38
Canary Islands wine? Yes indeed, with appealing black cherry fruit, dark chocolate and tar aromas and flavors wrapped in firm, toasty oak. This 65% Listan Negro and 35% Negramoll blend rides a lean frame, similar in weight and texture to a mainstream Rioja or Tuscan red. Finishes long and smooth with even, well-dispersed tannins. Tasty now, and should hold or…  — M.M.  (4/1/2002)

Anima Negra 2007 ÀN/2 Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  1. $25
Roasted and baked on first blush, but then the wine’s complexity and use of unusual Mallorcan grape varieties take over. Along the way there’s flavors and aromas of prune, earth, leather, spice and Mediterranean terroir. It’s also bringing tobacco and leaf notes to the table. A fun, different wine that goes nicely with tapas. Drink now through 2011–12.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Anima Negra 2006 Àn Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  1. $50
Baked, earthy and leathery, just like all the AN wines. But there’s also a smooth intersection of the old and new worlds here; it’s one part rooty, oaky and rich but also dry, leathery and indigenous to the Balearics (the base grape is Callet). Finishes a little sweet and warm, and thus it’s begging to be drunk now.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Anima Negra 2004 Àn Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $53
Overall this Callet-led blend might exceed its more oaked, richer brother known as Son Negre. Àn has a rooty, oak-driven nose with hints of herbs and tobacco, while the palate is dark and tasty, with blackberry, cherry and cured meat flavors. Finishes with pepper and a lash of leftover oak that hopefully will disappear as the wine ages. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (2/1/2008)

Son Bordils 2003 Negre Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $27
The earthy brick color and dry fruit aromas announce that this isn’t a typical wine. The blend is Merlot, Callet and Syrah, and it hails from the island of Mallorca. The wine is a bit tough and angular, but the plum, raspberry and cherry flavors are tightly formed and fenced in by potent acidity and oak. Interesting but not for everyone.  — M.S.  (2/1/2008)

Anima Negra 2004 Son Negre Red (Vi de la Terra Illes Balears)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $110
Heavily oaked and loaded down with butter and resin, this is a wine for those infatuated with the obscure. The blend is 90% Callet and 10% Fogoneu, and don’t ask us to give you the history of these Mallorcan grapes. Suffice it to say that this wine is broad, a bit stewy and very different. It’s not heavy like an anchor but it has its chunky shoulder pads to deal…  — M.S.  (2/1/2008)
