Kynsi 2005 Stone Corral Vineyard Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)
-
$45
An enormously opulent wine, brimming with gobs of red cherries, currants, mocha, clove, cinnamon and pepper flavors. Impresses for the lushness and integrity of the structure. Brilliant wine, just gorgeous, a real crowd-pleaser. With its recent track record, Kynsi enters the front ranks of California Pinot Noir producers.

Center of Effort 2008 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)

One of the best Edna Valley Pinot Noirs ever. This region normally produces Pinots with crisp acidity and fine varietal character, and so it is here, with its cherry, black raspberry, red currant and sandalwood flavors. But there’s extra depth and complexity, with a wildly exotic, spicy edge, that lift the wine into greatness. Right up there with the best of…

Alban 2003 Seymour's Syrah (Edna Valley)
Tremendous depth and complexity, with red and black stone fruits, berries, spices and herbs. Layers of anise, chocolate, oak. Tannins are rich, thick, soft and negotiable now. Huge wine.

Alban 2000 Costello T.B.A. Viognier (Edna Valley)

Glugs out of the bottle as thick as mineral oil, a hint to the viscous texture. Don’t chill this too much, because it will stun the intensely rich botrytis and apricot preserves aromas, with their edge of wild honey and cinnamon. The ultimate impression is in the mouth, where the apricot and pear tart flavors drink like a nectary syrup, but are relieved with…

Tin House 2004 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)
-
$32
Tasted blind, I thought this was Russian River. It has the classic balance, complexity and flavors of that region, showing cherries, cola, rhubarb pie, pomegranates and spice, with a full-bodied dryness and long, ageworthy finish. Maybe part of the confusion is the Dijon clones. Whatever, it’s a really wonderful Pinot Noir, succulent and compelling.

Tolosa 2004 1772 Edna Ranch Chardonnay (Edna Valley)
-
$42
Here’s a really good Chardonnay: Crisp, delicate and dry, it shows great acidity and brilliant fruit, saturating the palate with pineapple tart, Key lime pie, vanilla cream, crème brûlée and cinnamon spice flavors. Finishes with the deliciously creamy, yeasty complexities of lees aging.

Pristine is the word that comes to mind. Also pure, transparent, lucid. It’s bone dry and crisp and elusively complex in citrus, pear, mineral and floral aromas and flavors, subtlely enhanced with oak. Only 45 cases were produced, but it’s worth the search.
