Another smooth, silky wine from this Zinfandel specialist. It’s packed with bold flavors: Chocolate, coffee, plum, blackberry, cherry, vanilla, mocha and toast are all well integrated. The tannins are quite smooth and firm, giving the wine excellent structure and a long finish.

Dense and licorice-like at first. The wine then opens up to reveal a complex array of black cherry, black plum, blackberry, spice, chocolate, coffee, camphor, and sweet oak. A beautiful example of an effusive but nonetheless controlled style. Long and lush at the end.

Big, rich, bold and extracted, a thrilling Zin from Contra Costa County. It’s gigantic in blackberry, blueberry, cherry and spice flavors, with a delicious edge of sweet herbs and white pepper. There are substantial tannins but they’re sweet.

The winery doesn’t tell us where in this gigantic, multi-county region the grapes came from, but it’s quite a good wine. Firm in citrusy acids, with a mineral undertow, it’s a dry, elegant wine with complex notes of pineapples, buttered toast and creamy lees. Lots of oak, but it’s integrated with the fruit.

Hestan only makes this one white wine. Though its beginnings might seem humble, the juice in the bottle surely will change anyone’s mind. This is liquid gold in color, with deep petrol aromas and a note of toasted caramel oak. It’s superbly balanced, with minerality winning the day—especially on the finish. This wine starts out like a California blockbuster but…

Kent Rosenblum, the Zinmeister from Alameda, owns no vineyards but consistently produces some of California's best Zinfandels. He sources grapes from some of the state's oldest vineayrds, including Continente, where vines planted in 1879 by the Continente family are still farmed by them today in what may be the oldest surviving Zinfandel vineyard. The '99 edition…

Lush and round textured, with pleasing black cherry, blackberry, plum, blueberry, chocolate, coffee, herb and spice flavors. It all sits on velvety smooth tannins, finishing long and lush.

It’s very rich and textured, a sumptuous, velvety wine with classic Zin flavors of brambly berries and chocolate and dry, fine tannins. Has that explosively vibrant, jammy character of young Zin.
