Fife 1999 Old Yokayo Ranch Vineyard Syrah (Mendocino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $35
From warm western slopes over Ukiah Valley, a powerhouse combining audacious fruit with impeccable balance. Concentrated flavors of red and black berries, chocolate, white pepper, bacon, tobacco and coffee are rich, yet with only 13.5 percent alcohol, the wine is balanced and gentle. The mouthfeel is stunning. Editors’ Choice. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Fife 1999 L'Attitude Red (Mendocino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $20
A Rhône blend, and the wine that best exemplifies the Châteauneuf-style blend that inland Mendocino is hoping will put it on the map. This is magnificent stuff, lusty and full-bodied, with mixed berry flavors that are dominated by the aroma of white pepper. It’s dry, with complex, dusty tannins and a round, smooth mouthfeel. Lighter than Cabernet but denser than…  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Eaglepoint Ranch 1999 Syrah (Mendocino)

  1. $24
From longtime growers, now vintners, on the western slopes of the Mayacamas comes this impressive and huge wine. It’s dark as night, with brilliantly complex aromas of berries, leather, sage, smoke and white pepper. It’s also mouth filling, and has so many facets, it’s hard to keep track. The depth of flavor is stunning, while dusty tannins provide structure. A…  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Fife 1997 L'Attitude Red (Mendocino)

  1. $18
A Rhône blend dominated by Syrah’s super-black peppery aromas, paprika and Asian spices. The fruit, and there’s lots of it, comes out in the mouth--juicy and ripe and intense. Impressive for its extract. Very high quality.  — S.H.  (3/1/2000)

Hidden Cellars 1998 Eaglepoint Ranch - Mendocino Heritage Petite Sirah (Mendocino)

  1. $25
Looks so dark, you could fill a fountain pen with it. They take “Pet” seriously in these parts and vinify it the way the red soil grows it: fiercely strong and pushy. This is an enormous wine, massive in berry flavor, bone dry, sappy and juicy. It will probably age forever. The most amazing thing is the alcohol, a modest 13.5%, which makes it balanced. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Claudia Springs 1998 Eagle Point Ranch Zinfandel (Mendocino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Zin with a Pinot sensibility; it’s bright, spicy and forward. Sweet, delicious fruit, with accents of cinnamon, cardamom and anise. This is an elegant and subtle wine, but unusually long and complex, with wonderful structure. Enticing, enchanting wine.  — P.G.  (3/1/2001)

Jeriko 2001 Brut Chardonnay (Mendocino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
Actually a Blanc de Blancs, since it’s 100% Chardonnay, this is a wine of great purity, maybe because of the organic grapes. The bread dough, vanilla and subtle peach flavors have a very rich, creamy texture, without the jaggedness of ordinary bubblies. This is an important new addition to California’s sparkling wine portfolio.  — S.H.  (6/1/2006)

Fife 2001 L'Attitude 39 Red (Mendocino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Fascinating to taste this alongside Fife’s 2002 Redhead Red. Both wines have pretty much the same Southern Rhône blend, although they’re from different vintages. L’Attitude is a bigger, more complex wine, thicker and perhaps softer, but everything is deeper and more intriguing. It’s one of the best Carignane-based wines I’ve ever had.  — S.H.  (11/1/2006)
