Obsidian Ridge 2009 Half Mile Red (Red Hills Lake County)

The winery doesn’t reveal on the label what grape varieties are in this blend, but they’re Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It’s a fine, delicious wine, with blackberry, dark chocolate and bacon flavors, wrapped into exceedingly fine tannins. It’s well-balanced, too, with moderate alcohol and a nice lick of acids. Impressive and classy from this Lake County winery.

Fortress 2007 Petite Sirah (Red Hills Lake County)

A beautiful Petite Sirah, and a serious player. Shows the classic balance and elegance of a fine red wine, with smooth tannins framing the variety’s wildly exotic flavors of blackberries, blueberries, bacon, tobacco, grilled mushrooms, tamari, anise and lots of black pepper. Great now with BBQ, and should evolve in interesting ways for many years.

Cakebread 2005 Zinfandel (Red Hills Lake County)

Peppery spice is the hallmark of this wine. Other than that, it’s very Cabernet-like. Dry, full-bodied and balanced, it shows luscious black currant and chocolate flavors, and the tannins are as smooth and ripe as anywhere on earth.

This is the best Obsidian Cab since the 2002, and for similar reasons. It was a good vintage for Cabernet. The wine is rich and peppery and lush in black currant flavors, with beautifully sculpted, ripe tannins. Provides more evidence that this Red Hills of Lake County appellation has enormous potential for Cabernet.
