From 72-year old vines grown in an interior Mendocino location that has a very wide summer temperature swing. Cool nights have preserved vital acidity, but the heat took its toll, resulting in a sugary sweetness and high alcohol.
Overly ripe grapes have given this wine unbalanced aromas of stewed prunes and make it taste hot and ponderous. Cool nights preserved vital acidity but the fruit tastes cooked. You might almost think this was Syrah except for the tannins. The dry finish reprises the pruny theme. —S.H.
