Kenefick Ranch 2006 Pickett Road Red (Calistoga)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $55
Young, intense and briary, with summer herb notes of anise framing ripe, spicy blackberries. Oak adds a rich, deft touch of sweet char. The tannins are considerable and brooding, giving this dry young wine an astringent tightness. Shows all the hallmarks of ageability. 45% Merlot, 43% Petit Verdot 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Laura Zahtila 2007 Barlow Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Calistoga)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011
Very dark, rich and dramatic. Massively constructed, with vast reserves of blackberry jam, blackstrap molasses, mocha, smoked meat, mushu plum sauce and sweet, smoky oak. The tannins are big, ripe and astringent. A great Cabernet that clearly needs plenty of time. Drink 2015 and beyond.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Summers 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Calistoga)

  1. $59
A gorgeous Cabernet, among the best Summers has ever released. Actually, their Reserve Cab tends to fly under the radar, and is a good buy for that reason, although they did raise the price considerably with this ’08 bottling. The wine, which is 100% Cabernet, is showing beautifully now, with soft, rich tannins and luscious flavors of blackberries, black currants…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Bennett Lane 2008 Lynch Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Calistoga)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
A very rich, dry Cabernet, marked by dusty tannins, and with flavors of blackberries, dark chocolate, sweet herbs and green olives. Very fine in the mouth, clearly a wine with pedigree, but it needs time. Hold until 2014.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Shypoke 2007 Reserve Charbono (Calistoga)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $40
Shows the rugged tannins and acidity of this old variety, with a full-bodied mouthfeel. Really delivers on the fruit, with dark flavors of mulberries, plums, blackberries and blueberries, as well as an earthy richness. Bone dry and completely balanced, it will develop for more than ten years.  — S.H.  (8/1/2011)

Turnbull 2008 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon (Calistoga)

  1. $75
The extra heat of Calistoga shows in this wine’s softness, which limits its ageability. On the other hand, it’s supremely ripe in blackberries, cherries, currants and milk chocolate, while oak adds elaborate layers of buttered toast and caramel. Drink now–2015.  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Vermeil 2009 Luvisi 1908 Vineyard Zinfandel (Calistoga)

  1. $38
The wine, from this old vineyard, contains a good chunk of Petite Sirah, which adds body and tannins to the Zinfandel. It’s a delicious wine, wonderfully drinkable, with deep, complex blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice, raisin, black pepper and sandalwood flavors that finish long and spicy.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Envy 2008 Bee Bee's Blend Red (Calistoga)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $48
A great, complex wine for drinking now with roasts and stews. Smoothly tannic, it’s big, yet dry and subtle, showing flavors of blackberries, raspberries and cherries, with a delightful minerality. The sweet finish is long, rich and spicy.  — S.H.  (9/1/2011)
