Colgin 2005 Cariad Red (Napa County)

Cariad is an interesting Bordeaux blend, the ’05 consisting of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. It feels a little tentative now, as if the components are still learning how to mesh. There’s a shy, tannic quality to the cherry, currant, chocolate and plum flavors, and a glyceriney mouthfeel that makes the wine slippery smooth. Give it a few years…  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Schramsberg 1998 J. Schram Sparkling (Napa County)

  1. $80
Ultra-refined, super-elegant, the superlatives go on and on. Pours clear and bright, with the most subtle and inviting aromas, all dough and smoke and custardy vanilla with that tease of strawberry. So silky and light on the palate, airy, like silk, and perfectly dosed to a smooth dryness. You will find youthful acidity and scour on the finish, suggesting a wine…  — S.H.  (12/31/2004)

Newton 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa County)

Refined and beautiful. Made with a splash of Cabernet Franc that gives it a cherry pie filling richness, it’s dry and full-bodied, with thick but sweetly ripe tannins framing a Sauvignonesque core of cassis. Finishes with a wonderful, grounding tug of herbs and coffee. A major achievement at this price.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

This is a very fine wine, Merlot-based with a splash of Syrah, and it proves you don’t have to spend a lot to get a great Napa red. It shows rich, complex flavors of black and red currants, licorice, cola and sandalwood, in an elegantly silky structure that’s light and refined.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Incredibly rich and smooth, with subtle flavors of peaches, vanilla, yeast and smoke. Very dry, but so rich and creamy—just luscious. Feels light and airy and elegant all the way through the long finish.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Schramsberg 1996 Reserve Sparkling (Napa County)

Re-release. What a pretty bouquet on this 7-year-old wine! It is delicate but assertive, with flavors of dried hay, bread dough, vanilla, rich cream, smoke and peach. The mouthfeel is dry and a bit scoury in acidity, with a biscuity vanilla flavor. Still seems young. Best left in a cool cellar for another seven years.  — S.H.  (12/1/2003)

Newton 2007 Unfiltered Chardonnay (Napa County)

  1. $60
Very dry, a lean, austere Chardonnay currently marked by aloof flavors of lemons, limes and oak. Yet there’s something going on. As the wine warms in the glass it becomes richer, showing hidden pineapple tart, macadamia and crème brûlée. Firm, minerally acidity is there throughout, making for a mouthwatering cleanliness. Drink this streamlined, Chablis-like wine…  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Schramsberg 1994 Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged Sparkling (Napa County)

  1. $60
This is a highly pedigreed wine. You can judge that by the exceptionally smooth texture, and the fine quality of all the parts. It’s elegant and complex, and despite being 11 years old, the wine is still scoury and pert in acids, guaranteeing it a long future. The dosage gives it a honeyed finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)
