Sloan 2002 Red Wine (Rutherford)

  1. $245
Impossibly aromatic. Hard to imagine greater claret perfume. Shows the most refined mingling of smoky oak, cassis, cherries, roasted coconut macaroon, cocoa puff and spice scents. Absolutely first rate, as good as anything Napa Valley produces. Compellingly, addictively delicious, but so dry and voluptuous. Classic wine, with perfect alignment of fruit, acids…  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Rubicon Estate 2002 Red (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
Fragrant, showing cascades of violets, caramelized new oak, sweet cherry pie, cocoa and cassis aromas. In the mouth, it’s unctuous, and floods the palate with sweet, savory flavors. Has a youthful jamminess right now, which will melt off and refine as time goes by. Such is the elegance and balance that cellaring it for 20 years will be no problem. This is the best…  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Beaulieu Vineyard 1995 Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
Try to overlook the wine geek name on the label and pay attention to the wine, which is superb from the first peppery/spicy aromas to the rich, velvety texture of the long finish, where opening fruit flavors loop back to add complexity and depth.  — W.E.  (6/1/1999)

Staglin 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
Starts with an extraordinarily complex, refined aroma, detailed and inviting in cassis, tobacco, anise, cocoa and smoky oak. In the mouth, there’s fantastic depth and complexity. The wine is rich, profound, a star even in its Rutherford stable of thoroughbreds. It has enormous power, with finely ground, sweet tannins. Absolutely gorgeous now, with the stuffing and…  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)

Niebaum-Coppola 1997 Rubicon Red (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
A masterpiece from this near perfect vintage. Completely ripe, classic and fresh, with oodles of red cherry and blackcurrant flavors that are generously oaked. Amazingly, the wine is still young and tannic. So beautifully structured, so smooth and polished, firm yet soft, just a gorgeous wine. Hold onto it until at least 2012, if you can.  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Hall 2006 Exzellenz Red Wine Sacrashe Vineyard (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $150
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is like a neutron star, with massive power packed into a concentrated mass. Just huge in black currants, black cherries and chocolate, almost as thick as molasses, yet dry and firm and minerally. Vast weight and authority. Needs time. Will last 15–20 years.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Rubicon Estate 2005 Rubicon Red (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $145
Made from 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, with no Merlot or Cabernet Franc for the first time, the ’05 Rubicon tastes bigger and more impenetrable than any previous vintage. It’s thick and heavy at this time, with furry tannins and undeniably ripe flavors of blackberries, black currants, cherries, violets, chocolate and cedar, and a tang of melted minerals. Desperately…  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Staglin 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $175
A big wine, rather ponderous now in the size and forwardness of its fruit and the volume of mainly new French oak. The fruit is massive, suggesting black and red sour cherry candy, with oak influences of smoky char and pencil shavings, and complex notes of minerals and sweet violet flowers. But it all needs time to come together. Tasted in a large flight of 2007…  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)
