Napa Valley Wines

Located within California’s North Coast, Napa Valley accounts for approximately 5% of California’s vineyard acreage. The Valley stretches from the San Pablo Bay in the south to Calistoga in the north, and is home to 16 sub-AVAs, including Carneros, Spring Mountain District, Stags Leap District, Oakville and the newly established Coombsville. There are various microclimates throughout the region, according to our Napa Valley Wine Guide. In the cooler sub-appellation of Carneros, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay benefit from the cool-marine winds funneling in from the San Pablo Bay, which helps to create wines with bright fruit and fresh acids. In contrast, the temperature in Calistoga can reach 100 °F in the summer, creating ultrarripe grapes and, ultimately, opulent wines loaded with fleshy fruit. Many different varietals are grown throughout the region; however, our Napa Valley Wine Reviews reference the most successful being Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites. While the region has a well-documented wine history, suggesting that vines were planted as far back as the mid-1800s, the late André Tchelistcheff of Beaulieu Vineyard is often credited as a founding father of the modernized Napa wine industry. Cardinale 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $200
Tasted in a flight of great and famous Napa wines, this Cardinale stood at the head of the pack. Starts with a very fine nose of cedar, cassis, ripe blackberries and violets, then turns dramatic and refined in the mouth. Shows vast depth and length, with the finish a full minute of sweet fruits and spices. Marvelous tannins, so plush and elegant, so powerful yet…  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Harlan Estate 2002 Red (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $245
The aroma is deep and inviting, equal parts new oak, Cabernet fruit and dried herbs. Has tremendous weight, with red and black cherry, cola, chocolate, cassis and roasted coconut flavors. Brilliant now, virtually flawless and totally delicious, yet has the impeccable balance to age and even improve over the years. The listed price is its pre-release price. Drink…  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Colgin 2008 IX Estate Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $290
This is an absolutely beautiful wine to drink now, but the richness comes at the price of considerable alcohol. The color is dark and impenetrable, the aromas huge in Cabernet-inspired blackberries and black currants, with a touch of something herbal and also a stony minerality. There’s also a fascinating peatiness, like an Islay Scotch. It really opens up in the…  — S.H.  (10/1/2012)

David Arthur 2009 Elevation 1147 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $150
There are incredible aromatics on this Cabernet. It’s powerful yet subtle (how can that be?), all about sweet, crushed summer blackberries and pure cassis liqueur. Elaborate oak, in the form of buttered toast, is perfectly in balance, never overshadowing the fruit. The tannins are dry, rich and smooth, defining Napa elegance, grace and beauty. World class, dramatic…  — S.H.  (10/1/2012)

Harlan Estate 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $300
A stupendous wine that epitomizes the Harlan style of grace and power. Shows how the most elaborate vineyard and winery practices can contribute to a near-perfect wine, even in a less heralded vintage. The flavors cascade in endless tiers, black currant, cherry, mocha, Indian pudding, oak and spice, all coming together in a minute-long finish. Magnificent.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)

The Maiden 2001 Red (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $95
This companion wine to the famous Harlan Estate comes from the same Oakville vineyard. Decadent and vastly complex, it opens with cassis, grilled meat, cedar, spicebox, cigar box and cheddar aromas, and then turns medium- to full-bodied in the mouth. Terrific black cherry, blackberry and cassis fruit, pure and refined. Perfect elaboration of oak, char, tannins…  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

Colgin 2003 IX Estate Red Wine (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $175
From the winery’s estate vineyard, high up on Pritchard Hill above the Silverado Trail, comes this spectacular Cab-based masterpiece. The color is purple-black, and massively saturated. Very intricate, complex, totally enjoyable, almost perfect. Like a great Pauillac, this monumental wine announces cassis, blackberry, cigar box, pencil lead, spice and cedar flavors…  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Harlan Estate 2003 Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $265
Another spectacular Harlan hits the market. It shows the earthy quality that marks wines off the estate, with an aroma suggesting a warm bale of hay under the summer sun, a sweet straw and bay laurel scent that adds savory richness to the cherry, blackberry and chocolate flavors. As usual, the tannins are virtual perfection, at once sweet and firm, dense and fine…  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)
