Napa Valley Wines

Located within California’s North Coast, Napa Valley accounts for approximately 5% of California’s vineyard acreage. The Valley stretches from the San Pablo Bay in the south to Calistoga in the north, and is home to 16 sub-AVAs, including Carneros, Spring Mountain District, Stags Leap District, Oakville and the newly established Coombsville. There are various microclimates throughout the region, according to our Napa Valley Wine Guide. In the cooler sub-appellation of Carneros, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay benefit from the cool-marine winds funneling in from the San Pablo Bay, which helps to create wines with bright fruit and fresh acids. In contrast, the temperature in Calistoga can reach 100 °F in the summer, creating ultrarripe grapes and, ultimately, opulent wines loaded with fleshy fruit. Many different varietals are grown throughout the region; however, our Napa Valley Wine Reviews reference the most successful being Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites. While the region has a well-documented wine history, suggesting that vines were planted as far back as the mid-1800s, the late André Tchelistcheff of Beaulieu Vineyard is often credited as a founding father of the modernized Napa wine industry. Cardinale 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $200
Tasted in a flight of great and famous Napa wines, this Cardinale stood at the head of the pack. Starts with a very fine nose of cedar, cassis, ripe blackberries and violets, then turns dramatic and refined in the mouth. Shows vast depth and length, with the finish a full minute of sweet fruits and spices. Marvelous tannins, so plush and elegant, so powerful yet…  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Dolce 2006 Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
Enthusiast 100 2011 Score Chasers: USA 2011
With this wine, Dolce cements its status as California’s most consistently great dessert wine. This year’s blend is 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, and the grapes were infected with the botrytis, resulting in the fantastic sweetness. Devastating in apricot, orange, pear, honey, vanilla and créme brûlée flavors, in an unctuous, viscous texture, with…  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Harlan Estate 2004 Red (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $350
The price is prerelease; it will soar on the aftermarket. This is very great Harlan. It pours dark and saturated, and the tannins are big and sturdy, not aggressive, but sweet and finely ground. Still, they give a hardness to the immaculately ripe fruit that mandates cellaring. The flavors of currants, blackberries, plums, chocolate and cedar are lush, deep and…  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

BOND 2005 The Matriarch Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $90
This year’s Matriarch is very similar to Harlan Estate in structure, and in some ways, a superior wine, or at least more delicious now. Shows the most beautiful black currant, cedar, blueberry pie and Asian spice flavors. What makes the structure so gorgeous are the firm tannins. Ultimately, it’s a refined, exquisite red wine. Hard to imagine a better one for…  — S.H.  (5/1/2009)

The Maiden 2001 Red (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $95
This companion wine to the famous Harlan Estate comes from the same Oakville vineyard. Decadent and vastly complex, it opens with cassis, grilled meat, cedar, spicebox, cigar box and cheddar aromas, and then turns medium- to full-bodied in the mouth. Terrific black cherry, blackberry and cassis fruit, pure and refined. Perfect elaboration of oak, char, tannins…  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

Harlan Estate 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $300
A stupendous wine that epitomizes the Harlan style of grace and power. Shows how the most elaborate vineyard and winery practices can contribute to a near-perfect wine, even in a less heralded vintage. The flavors cascade in endless tiers, black currant, cherry, mocha, Indian pudding, oak and spice, all coming together in a minute-long finish. Magnificent.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)
