Kendall-Jackson 2006 Highland Estates Trace Ridge Red (Knights Valley)

  1. $125
Dark, viscous and monumental, this Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend detonates on the palate with black currants, chocolate and cedar concentration, wrapped into the most perfect tannins. Outstanding, and should age for many years. Only 277 cases of this wine, which was grown on steep hillsides, were produced.  — S.H.  (7/1/2009)

Kendall-Jackson 2007 Highlands Estates Trace Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)

  1. $70
Superb, opulent, just wonderful. Hard to exaggerate the beauty of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fantastically ripe and rich in black cherries, currants, sandalwood and spices, with a grounding streak of herbs. Beyond the flavors is the near-perfect structure, marked by smooth, complex tannins. Finishes sweet but completely dry, the paradox of a great wine. Drink…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Kendall-Jackson 2005 Highlands Estates Trace Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)

  1. $70
From a slope of Mount St. Helena overlooking this small valley appellation comes this very dense, young 100% Cab. It’s an impressive wine, not only for the sheer concentration of blackberry, currant and plum fruit flavors, but for the plush mouthfeel, which has a gorgeously soft quality. K-J’s winemakers really rock in the science of tannin management.  — S.H.  (7/1/2008)

  1. $55
Tremendous Cab, grown on the high slopes of this appellation where great Bordeaux reds come from. It hits the palate with hugely concentrated Cab flavors, flooding the mouth with black currants, plums, coffee, spices and gorgeously toasty French oak. Feels lavish, powerful, complex and ageworthy.  — S.H.  (6/1/2007)

Ehret 2006 Bella's Blend Red (Knights Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $39
A deeply impressive Bordeaux blend. It comes from this small, but prestigious, appellation, which is a bridge between Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Marked by dryness and a superb tannic structure, it has deep flavors of blackberries, black currants, violets, herbs and cedar. Needs time. Give it 4–6 years in the cellar.  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Knights Bridge 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $95
Grown in the winery’s estate vineyard, which is on the steep slopes of the western, Sonoma side of Mount St. Helena, this is a tough, tight young mountain wine. Made from 100% Cabernet, its blackberry and currant flavors have a distinct tang of minerals that are swamped by dry, astringent tannins. Dramatically structured, with brilliant acidity, but needs time…  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Peter Michael Winery 2004 L'Apres-Midi Sauvignon Blanc (Knights Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $42
As rich as a Chardonnay, yet with Sauvignon’s distinctive savory profile, this is great wine. From low-yielding mountain vineyards, the juice was barrel fermented and aged sur lies, but no malolactic fermentation was permitted. Few Sauvignons in California achieve this level of complexity. The lush, roasted nuts, with a firm, hard minerality throughout.  — S.H.  (8/1/2006)

Kendall-Jackson 2003 Trace Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
From mountain vineyards comes this deep, dark, impressively intense Cab. Opens with a blast of new oaky smoke, char and vanilla, but once in the mouth, huge waves of flamboyant blackberry and cassis, black cherry and vanilla oak flavors unfold, with a meaty note. The wine is totally dry and balanced, and while it’s drinkable now, it should improve through 2015.  — S.H.  (5/1/2006)
