Melrose 2011 Estate Grown Sauvignon Blanc (Umpqua Valley)

  1. $18
A vibrant, racy Sauvignon Blanc with concentrated notes of white grapefruit, herbs, and onion peel. It’s mouthwatering and richly flavored with mineral notes speckling the finish.  — S.S.  (6/1/2013)

Girardet 2001 Estate Riesling (Umpqua Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $8
A lot of shale in the soils adds interest to this elegant, light, fairly soft wine. Off-dry and balanced, it represents good value. Flavors of apples, pears and blossoms lead; a soft finish with a hint of caramel wraps it up.  — P.G.  (8/1/2002)

Girardet 2000 Reserve Baco Noir (Umpqua Valley)

  1. $35
Strong scents of hay and grass; it’s a bit like old-vine Zin but with more grapey fruit flavors. Grapey, slightly foxy, there is also some loganberry fruit, lots of acid and a good long finish.  — P.G.  (8/1/2002)

Abacela 2003 Grenache (Umpqua Valley)

  1. $22
Abacela remains the single most iconoclastic winery in the entire Northwest, pioneering unusual estate grown varietals in Oregon’s oft-neglected mid-section, the Umpqua valley. And doing it well, in all respects. The grenache is a bruiser, extracted, sappy and tannic, well made for its size, though lacking the super sweet extract of the Australian versions. Still…  — P.G.  (2/1/2005)

Abacela 2002 Tempranillo (Umpqua Valley)

  1. $20
The winery has staked its reputation on Tempranillo of all things, and consistently over a half dozen vintages it has surprised and delighted me with the results. Good color for this pale grape, and decent varietal character, though the estate bottling is clearly superior.  — P.G.  (8/1/2005)

Melrose Vineyards 2005 Merlot (Umpqua Valley)

  1. $22
Thick and chocolaty, this Umpqua Valley Merlot does not lack for flavor intensity. Plum jam, coffee and smoke whirl around the palate, well-matched to dark, ripe, chewy tannins.  — P.G.  (10/1/2008)

Abacela 2008 Albariño (Umpqua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
Abacela has single-handedly revolutionized winemaking in southern Oregon, introducing Iberian varieties with great success. This estate-grown Albariño is a high-acid wine, still spritzy and reduced when first opened. With breathing time it cleans up and shows the beginnings of varietal character.  — P.G.  (10/1/2009)

Abacela 2007 Cuvée Syrah (Umpqua Valley)

With fruit sourced entirely from the estate, this attractive wine is designed to be drunk young, no fuss. Vanilla, light toast, black olives, licorice and tart red fruits mix in a high-acid wine that will cut through grilled meats nicely.  — P.G.  (12/15/2009)
