Willamette Valley Wines

The Willamette Valley Wine Region is one of the most influential wine producing regions in all of Oregon as well as the entire Pacific Northwest. The region spans from the Columbia River in the north all the way down to Eugene in the South. It is by far Oregon’s largest AVA and is dominated by plantings of Pinot Noir and smaller amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling. The Willamette Valley is subdivided into six smaller appellations: Chehalem Mountains AVA, Dundee Hills AVA, McMinnville AVA, Ribbon Ridge AVA, Yamhill-Carlton District AVA and Eola-Amity Hills AVA. According to our Willamette Valley Wine Guide the mild, cool and somewhat moist climate provides ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, creating wines that are often considered the bridge between California and Burgundy style. The Pinot Noirs from this area tend to have black cherry and Dr. Pepper aromas and flavors with nuances of earth and herbs. For a great pairing, try these wines with herb-crusted roasted chicken, pork loin and mild game birds. Established in 1984, this bourgeoning region now has more than 200 wineries with many of them producing the top selections in our Willamette Valley Wine Ratings. Check out our Williamette Valley Wine Reviews for more information on these standout wines.

Bergström 2009 de Lancellotti Vineyard Pinot Noir (Chehalem Mountains)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $63
A concentrated core of pure, sweet raspberry and cherry fruit is showcased in a wine of remarkable penetration and length. The fruit, from a biodynamic estate vineyard, is perfumed and open, making this immediately accessible and supremely enjoyable. And yet cellaring will surely reward those with the patience and discipline to lay it down for up to a decade.  — P.G.  (6/1/2012)

Dark, full, generous and ripe to the far edge of elegance, this powerful Pinot is saturated with black fruits, annotated with fennel, pepper, smoke and espresso, the rich and varied flavors rolling right through a lush midpalate and on into a gently fading finish. Tendril 2009 Pinot Noir

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $48
Deep, firm and concentrated, this gorgeous wine has the muscularity of Cabernet, but the plush, velvet elegance of Pinot Noir. Youthful and rich, it has deep fruit flavors of blackberry and black cherry, with barrel notes of coffee, chocolate and anise. Full, smooth and supple, it is certainly among the best of the Oregon 2009s.  — P.G.  (8/1/2012)

Among an outstanding lineup of well-defined, beautifully refined Pinots from Le Cadeau, the Diversité takes top honors. Ponzi 2010 Aurora Pinot Noir

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
The Aurora has just a bit more texture and density than its superb companion wine, the Avellana Pinot Noir. Black cherry, cola and baking spice notes are accented with touches of iron filings and slivers of dark chocolate. Thoughtful winemaking is on display here, creating a dense wine that is nonetheless immediately accessible and delicious.  — P.G.  (3/1/2013)

  1. $60
A wine of surpassing vitality and complexity, it mixes notes of melon, jicama and citrus in a fine-tuned flavor explosion. Long and lively, with bracing minerality, it finishes with a fresh lick of sweet herb.  — P.G.  (3/1/2013)

Adelsheim 2007 Stoller Vineyards Chardonnay (Dundee Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $58
In some bottles, in some vintages, Oregon Chardonnays do become quite Burgundian in style, in all the best ways. This very limited (36 case) offering is one such; it is steely, structured, a bit stiff even, but laced with impressive minerality, and the tightly etched fruit flavors reminiscent of Chablis.  — P.G.  (12/15/2009)
