Washington Wines

This Pacific Northwest region of the US has recently made significant advances in its international wine presence. With its dense Cabernet Sauvignons and lush, plummy Merlots, Washington State’s production of quality wines has bloomed over the last couple of decades. Located just north of Oregon, Washington’s inland AVAs have experienced the most success due to the Cascade Mountains protection from the marine influence of the Pacific Ocean and the Puget Sound. While Washington has 11 defined AVAs, the Columbia Valley is by far the biggest and most prolific. Covering almost a third of the state, and even creeping over the state line into Oregon, it encompasses several smaller AVAs, including Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope, Walla Walla and Yakima Valley. The greatest Washington State wines have been described as having the structure and finesse of the Old World while displaying the flashy and ripe fruit of the New World. While red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the most notable, Chardonnay and Riesling have proven to be the favored white varieties, creating dependable wines with plenty of vibrant fruit and crisp acidity. Recently, Washington wine trends have begun to favor the production of Syrah-dominant reds. These powerful, Rhône-styled bottlings are packed with smoked meat, tapenade and black fruit flavors. Grand Rêve 2007 Collaboration Series Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Mountain)

  1. $75
The purity is astonishing—a ringing bell of vivid, racy blueberry, blackberry and black cherry fruit. The 100% new French oak is completely absorbed into the wine, its flavors unobtrusive. The essence of the vineyard and the grape, this is a must-taste for lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Mountain. Sleek, tight, extremely youthful but polished and dense.  — P.G.  (11/1/2010)

Cayuse 2008 En Chamberlin Vineyard Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $70
A huge wine, fat with the characteristic Cayuse funk, and accented with plenty of meaty asphalt. Potent and powerful, bursting with berries and plums, scented with the aromas of earth and sweet (not dried) herb, chicken stock and flavors that run through the same exotic range. Round and full, forward and balanced, drinking well and maybe just a bit rounder than its…  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)

K Vintners 2007 The Hustler Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $140
Only the second time The Hustler has been made, this spent 38 months in barrel. All the fruit is sourced from the Morrison Lane vineyard. Port-like and amazingly concentrated, it’s about as far as a dry wine can go and show fruit that is not buried in new oak. Here the fruit is a dark blend of berries and cassis; there is a dense layer of chocolate and earth…  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Quilceda Creek 2009 Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
Quilceda Creek’s Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a dense, exotic and luxurious nose: a mix of roasted coffee, dark fruit and Asian spice. At first it’s quite dense and unyielding, but it opens slowly over a period of days—not hours—remaining dense and compact, with a remarkable array of dark fruits and barrel flavors. As with its companion reds from…  — P.G.  (9/1/2012)
