Cameron Hughes 2009 Lot 240 Albariño (Clarksburg)

$11
The kind of light drinking, balanced, crisp, clean white wine one could drink all day, made by the Cameron Hughes folks from Clarksburg-grown grapes, another testament to the appellation's ability to do nice things with Mediterranean whites. Juicy with sweet peach, lime and apple and a nose full of honeysuckle, it finishes easy.

Cameron Hughes 2007 Lot 172 Cabernet Sauvignon (Atlas Peak)
-
$22
Another of Cameron Hughes’ terrific Cabernets at a good price. This wine will easily stand beside Cabs far more expensive, with its dry, crisply complex flavors of blackberries, cherries, currants, anise, mocha and oak.

Cameron Hughes 2006 Lot 103 Meritage (Napa Valley)
-
$14
This vintage was a good one for Cameron Hughes’ Bordeaux-style wines, and this Cabernet-based blend, which contains a splash of Carmenere, is as good as anything they’ve released. It’s juicy-rich in blackberries, currants, carob and cedar, wrapped into firm, fine tannins.

Cameron Hughes 2004 Lot 93 Tempranillo (Rioja)
-
$21
Cameron Hughes bottles dozens of wines from California growers, and now he’s expanded to include Rioja and Campo de Borja in Spain along with South Africa. This wine is made in the full-throttled, modern style. There’s copious oak, toast and darkness on the bouquet, and then full-bodied black plum, raspberry and spice flavors. Quite a bulky, oaky style, but also…

Cameron Hughes 2007 Lot 178 Syrah (Los Carneros)
-
$12
Some producer in Carneros didn’t want the wine that went into this negociant’s ‘07 Syrah, to judge by its quality. Lucky for Cameron Hughes. It’s a fine wine, full-bodied and dry, with spicy flavors of currants, teriaki beef, black pepper and cola, with a bracing minerality that grounds the richness. Could be more concentrated, but it's a very great value.
