The kind of light drinking, balanced, crisp, clean white wine one could drink all day, made by the Cameron Hughes folks from Clarksburg-grown grapes, another testament to the appellation's ability to do nice things with Mediterranean whites. Juicy with sweet peach, lime and apple and a nose full of honeysuckle, it finishes easy.  — V.B.  (9/1/2011)

Cameron Hughes 2007 Lot 172 Cabernet Sauvignon (Atlas Peak)

  1. $22
Another of Cameron Hughes’ terrific Cabernets at a good price. This wine will easily stand beside Cabs far more expensive, with its dry, crisply complex flavors of blackberries, cherries, currants, anise, mocha and oak.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

It is one of the mysteries of the universe how negociant Cameron Hughes produces wines like this at such a great price. It is a Zinfandel lover’s Zinfandel, rich and peppery and briary. Really satisfies with wild forest red and black berry flavors tingled with tons of spice, and finishes dry and balanced.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

Cameron Hughes 2006 Lot 104 Meritage (Stellenbosch)

Deep, rich aromas of cloves, cedar and red berry start this elegant but exotic red blend from Cameron Hughes. On the palate, spicy fruit, smoke and a minerally backbone give it a poised character. Friendly but demands attention.  — S.K.  (12/31/2009)

Cameron Hughes 2006 Lot 103 Meritage (Napa Valley)

  1. $14
This vintage was a good one for Cameron Hughes’ Bordeaux-style wines, and this Cabernet-based blend, which contains a splash of Carmenere, is as good as anything they’ve released. It’s juicy-rich in blackberries, currants, carob and cedar, wrapped into firm, fine tannins.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

Cameron Hughes 2004 Lot 93 Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $21
Cameron Hughes bottles dozens of wines from California growers, and now he’s expanded to include Rioja and Campo de Borja in Spain along with South Africa. This wine is made in the full-throttled, modern style. There’s copious oak, toast and darkness on the bouquet, and then full-bodied black plum, raspberry and spice flavors. Quite a bulky, oaky style, but also…  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Cameron Hughes 2009 Lot 224 Syrah (High Valley)

With a great nose of dark plum, raspberry and peppery black licorice one has to wonder, how does he do it? Cameron Hughes that is, again and again making great wines at great values. Very easy drinking.  — V.B.  (12/15/2011)

Cameron Hughes 2007 Lot 178 Syrah (Los Carneros)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Some producer in Carneros didn’t want the wine that went into this negociant’s ‘07 Syrah, to judge by its quality. Lucky for Cameron Hughes. It’s a fine wine, full-bodied and dry, with spicy flavors of currants, teriaki beef, black pepper and cola, with a bracing minerality that grounds the richness. Could be more concentrated, but it's a very great value.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)
