Top 50 Spirits 2011

Arguably, 2011 was the year of whiskey. Never before have so many and so varied new expressions of the spirit come to the U.S. market—smoky and smooth, blended and single malt, Bourbon and Scotch and something else altogether. So if this year’s Top 50 seems heavily weighted toward the whiskey category, it’s with good reason.

But whiskey may need to watch its back as 2012 rounds the corner, because so many other spirit categories have wonderful offerings too: aged rums, Tequilas and bright young upstart mezcals, plus a growing range of liqueurs, from stalwarts to fresh new flavors, and nearly-forgotten products that importers are reintroducing. Any one of these could change the spirits landscape in the year ahead.

The 50 spirits on the following pages represent the best of what we tasted in 2011 exclusively, so if a particular spirit category is not represented, it may be due to few, or relatively less notable, submissions. But it’s a pleasure to introduce what we have—a list of 50 stellar spirits.

Ron Abuelo Centuria

  1. $130
Made to celebrate 100 years of rum making, this is a spirit to savor. It’s made from a blend of rums aged from eight up to 30 years in American whiskey barrels. The unusually deep caramel hue advertises the powerful flavors: crème brûlée, lingering and kaleidoscopic notes of coffee bean, caramel, cola, muted gingerbread spices and just a mere hint of sweetness.  — K.N.  (12/1/2011)

Pyrat XO Reserve Rum

  1. $25
From this dark amber liquid wafts a luxurious aroma of toffee, marzipan, candied fruit and sarsparilla. On the sweeter side of the spectrum, this aged rum is gorgeous and mouth-filling, with caramel and a sprinkling of ginger and cinnamon fireworks on the elongated finish.  — K.N.  (12/1/2011)

Plantation Rum Grande Reserve 5 Year Old Barbados

  1. $20
As might be expected from a rum affiliated with a Cognac maker, this honey-colored spirit is finished in old Cognac barrels. The end result is luxe but light, yielding caramel and orange peel aromas, as well as loads of sweet honey and creamy caramel on the palate, accented with a bright touch of lemon. Especially enjoyable mixed with ginger beer, Dark & Stormy-style.  — K.N.  (12/1/2011)
