Tequila

Made from the blue agave plant, tequila holds its historic origins in Mexico. While Mexico is legally designated as the sole producer of 100% agave tequila, mixto (blended) tequilas can be produced internationally. A clear spirit upon distillation, tequila can achieve a darker color over time, or from the addition of caramel or other added flavors. There are four types of tequila that are distinguishable by age—Silver or blanco (white) tequila is generally un-aged; gold or joven (young) tequila is un-aged tequila flavored with caramel; reposado (rested) tequila is aged anywhere between 2-9 months, and añejo (old) tequila is aged for 1-3 years. After 3 years in the barrel, an aged tequila is considered to be "extra añejo.” Silver and resposado tequilas are primarily used for cocktails, while longer-aged tequilas are often reserved for sipping straight up. Chinaco Añejo Tequila Exceptional

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
This light amber Tequila had a warm caramel scent with smoky, vegetal notes. Like the reposado expression, the añejo had a caramel flavor but a strong plastic-y finish.  — K.N.  (5/1/2011)

El Tesoro Añejo

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $57
A pale gold, light-bodied spirit with a brisk feel and hearty alcohol sting. The scent landed somewhere between smoky and menthol, bringing to mind menthol cigarettes. But the flavor was warm and honey-like.  — K.N.  (5/1/2011)

Regional Reposado Tequila

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Although this lowlands Tequila rested in oak for six months, the spirit shows practically no color or aroma from its time in barrels. The flavor has notes of resin, with a light floral or herbal finish, and a flash of alcoholic heat on the tongue.  — K.N.  (5/1/2012)

This highlands Tequila has a funky vegetal scent and herbaceous flavors that combine oregano, resin and faint agave sweetness. It does come in a distinctive, bright-blue pyramid-shaped bottle.  — K.N.  (5/1/2012)

Gran Patron Platinum Silver Tequila 100% de Agave NOM-1492 CRT

  1. $189
Bouquet includes subtle notes of road tar, white pepper and just-harvested green agave with nuances of palm oil and sage. The palate entry is off-dry, spicy, and vegetal; at midpalate the taste profile turns surprisingly astringent and lean, ending up on flax-like note.  — P.P.  (8/1/2005)

Two Fingers Gold Tequila NOM-1142-I CRT

  1. $13
Vegetal aroma with distant notes of black pepper and reed/tall grass. The palate entry is semisweet and bean/legume-like; at midpalate a spirity harshness takes hold. Ends bittersweet and a bit raw. For people who like their mixto tequila. on the rough-and-ready side.  — P.P.  (8/1/2005)

Herencia de Plata Anejo 100% Agave Tequila NOM-1124

  1. $36
No bouquet worth discussing. Palate entry offers a flat and flabby sweet taste along with some pleasing almond and walnut flavors; at midpalate, the taste profile goes candied and rubbery. Ends pleasantly sweet and oaky.  — P.P.  (8/1/2004)

Destileria Porfidio Unwooded Blue Agave Spirit

  1. $30
First sniffings detect herbal/peppery scents, though the road tar/asphalt quality makes me think more of mezcal. Further time bolsters the keenly herbal agave pulpiness and introduces dill and fennel to the aromatic mix. Palate entry is sweet; by midpalate, the smokiness becomes bitter then it turns sweet and black licorice-like. Finish mixes licorice sweetness…  — P.P.  (12/15/2003)
