Big but clumsy, with unrefined aromas of berry fruit and herbs. The palate is grabbby and sassy, but it’s also generous with the sappy black plum, berry and herbal flavors. A combination of menthol and molasses works the weighty finish, and overall this seems like a goofy, awkward school kid.

Roast beef and black cherry notes open this juicy example from South Australia. Fresh but diffuse fruit notes dominate the crisp palate and lead to a cherry-flavored finish that lacks persistance. Drink now.

With jammy flavors of blackberries, cherries, raspberries and smoky oak, this easy-drinking Petite Sirah shows the peppery notes and thick tannins of the variety. Drink now.

Rustic and somewhat sharp, this Zin has a green, spearmint streak, with some harsh tannins, which suggests unevenly ripened berries, despite very high alcohol. It’s like a combination of cherry Lifesavers, blackberries and Altoids breath mints. Drink now.

Smoky, sweet oak overwhelms the underlying wine, giving a caramelized sweetness to the basic black currant flavors. Doesn’t seem like an ager.

The high percentage of Cabernet Franc makes itself known in this wine with tobacco leaf and tomato skin aromas on the nose. The palate is dense, with black cherry and plum flavors. The gripping tannins turn a bit astringent on the finish. Try with steak or hamburgers.

This wine is jam in a bottle. Floods the mouth with ripe, spicy flavors of raspberries, cherries and blackberries, wrapped into a light, silky texture.

Tastes overly sweet, almost like a dessert wine, the result of residual sugar. The flavors of cherries, black raspberries and chocolate are wrapped in a soft texture.
