Bordeaux-style Red Blend

Bordeaux-style Blends are a style of wine rather than an individual variety. The five classic red grapes used are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Typically, Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot are the main components in the blend, with smaller percentages of the other three varieties. Bordeaux-style blends may also be labeled Meritage or Claret. Though there is a regional name attached to this listing, not all wines categorized as Bordeaux-style Blends are from Bordeaux; in fact, Bordeaux-style Blends are produced all over the world. You can use Wine Enthusiast’s online Buying Guide to find the top-rated Bordeaux-style Blends among our extensive Bordeaux-style Blend wine reviews and easy-to-use database. Our Bordeaux-style Blend reviews will give you a general idea what to expect from wines made in the Bordeaux style, and will help you find one that best suits your needs.

Chaddsford 2005 Merican Meritage

  1. $40
A few years of age have brought out mineral and green pepper notes, giving this Pennsylvania red blend a Bordeaux-like quality. It’s grippy and fairly crisp—just screaming for a steak.  — W.E.  (7/1/2010)

Château les Ormes Sorbet 2007 Red (Médoc)

  • Online Exclusive
Tobacco and spice aromas precede a palate that has some weight, the tannins quite dry and tight but in balance with the red berry fruits. Spicy wood also shows, while the final acidity is almost too fresh.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)

Château Grand Corbin 2007 Red (Saint-Émilion)

  • Online Exclusive
A wine that is highly extracted, the tannins with a hard edge. It is not helped by excessive wood. The ensemble is aggressive and rather tough.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)

D & R Dubois 2003 Arthémis Red (Côtes de Castillon)

From the weight of the bottle, Danielle and Richard Dubois obviously think this wine is important. In fact, it is a rich, stewed-fruit-flavored wine, with soft and dense tannins, very ready to drink, but suffering from the hot year.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)
