New Zealand Industry Appointments and Announcements

New Zealand Winegrowers are cheering the nomination of Dr. John Barker for director general of the International Organisation of Vine & Wine.

The OIV is the Paris-based intergovernmental scientific and technical reference body for wine. With 46 members accounting for more than 85 percent of global wine production and nearly 80 percent of world consumption, it is sometimes called the “UN of wine.”

Barker is the primary external counsel to New Zealand Winegrowers, a national organization with 850 growers and 700 wineries as members.

Going For Gold At The 2017 Air New Zealand Wine Awards

There were 80 gold-medal winners at this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards. More than 1,300 wines were judged over three days.

“Pinot Noir was once again the star performer with 20 golds. Predominantly the wines came from Central Otago, but Marlborough and Martinborough were also in the mix,” said Warren Gibson, who headed the judging panels.

“The top wines from other categories were exceptional, particularly from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot, Cabernet & Blends. Marlborough has performed very strongly this year, with 41 golds, but it is good to see Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay bringing in plenty of gold medals too,” he said.

Also, 221 silver medals and 493 bronzes were awarded across 17 classes. For the full list, click here.

Trophies will be handed out on Nov. 25 at a black-tie dinner.
