Sangiovese

Sangiovese is a red grape native to Tuscany. It is extremely popular in Italy, where it is the base grape for Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Morellino di Scansano and others. Sangiovese-based wines are usually lightly colored with high acid, light body and moderate to high tannins. The dominating characteristics are commonly red cherry, violets and tea. You can use Wine Enthusiast’s online Buying Guide to find the top-rated Sangiovese among our extensive Sangiovese wine reviews and easy-to-use database. Marchesi de' Frescobaldi 1999 Castelgiocondo Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
Tight as nails on the nose before it explodes on the palate in a cacophony of cherry, cassis, black plum, tobacco and chocolate. It’s like the best cigar and a great red wine rolled into one. Yes, the tannins are hammering and yes, the acidity is forward. But that only means this brilliant Brunello should age for 15 years without batting an eyelash. Imported by Folio  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Valdicava 1999 Madonna del Piano Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $130
Fresh asphalt, burning timber, bitter chocolate, and anything else that connotes “darkness” is what this heavyweight is about. And as rough as that may sound aromatically, on the palate it’s polished like a gemstone, with just enough grit and guts to push it forward. The fruit, meanwhile, is sensational, a panoply of black plums and cherries infused with cocoa and…  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Capanna 2007 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $55
Capanna’s offering in 2007 is extremely bold, dark and opulent. Loads of aromatic momentum in the form of blackberry, cherry liqueur, spice, leather, tobacco, rum cake, cinnamon, vanilla bean and bitter chocolate characterize the bouquet. The wine also shows a soft, ripe, generous texture, yet remains well-contained and balanced.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia 1995 Sangiovese (Toscana)

  1. $63
A superb wine; one of the greats. Plush like your favorite pillow, but sophisticated like a fine Italian leather sofa, this is a sumptuous, flawless red wine that is shockingly good. Though still young, Ornellaia is totally approachable. A short hour or two of breathing will prepare this beauty for current consumption. A classic. Grazie!  — M.S.  (5/1/1999)

Casanova di Neri 2000 Cerretalto Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $130
Bravo Giacomo Neri! This wine raises the bar on modern Brunello and offers a peek view into the future and potential of this incredibly expressive wine. Super concentrated and intense, whiffs of roasted espresso bean, tannery, summer-ripe black cherries, and porcini mushrooms peel back layer after layer. A firmly tannic touch is there to remind you to drink this…  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)
