A small parcel of Verdelho, planted originally in the 19th century and never officially recognized. The wine has a beautiful botrytis character, marked by pure acidity, by lemon and honey and great final freshness. Screwcap.

Palacios started his Valdeorras winery in 2004, and in short order he has established himself as a quality leader. His As Sortes is 100% Godello, from dry-farmed vines with age. This wine is rich, with ample oak, fresh and dry fruit flavors, and a walnut-infused finish. Quite Burgundian in style.

From extremely old Godello vines, this barrel-fermented wine comes only in magnums. It’s currently showing a lot of oak, but it’s also extremely well structured. It has an acid backbone that nobody could crack. Very serious, with intense apple, pear and minerality. Much like a fine Burgundy.

This gets going with apple, peach and mineral aromas that are pure and alluring. It feels lifted but a little creamy, with green banana, lime, orange and kiwi flavors. Solid and long on the finish; this is exemplary unoaked Verdejo.

Balanced Spanish whites were rare in the hot ’03 vintage, but this one is. Two female winemakers, hence the Two Victorias name, flat-out nailed this Verdejo, which pours on round peach, gooseberry, almond and mineral aromas and flavors. Clean as a whistle, with a finish that hits with power.

Round, fruity and quite exceptional in its class. This Verdejo sets the standard for Rueda; it’s loaded with green melon and pineapple up front and backed by bright apple, pear and green herb flavors. Perfectly balanced and fresh. Stands out from the crowd.

This is truly a unique wine in the sense that hardly any Verdejos are fermented in oak. Not only that, the end result is stellar. There’s soft buttercup aromas leading into a layered, vanilla-edged palate of spiced apple, melon and greens. The wine is round, substantive and it stirs interest. And for that we’re grateful. Drink now through 2008.

An excellent Verdejo from Rueda is as good as fresh, crisp white wine from Spain gets. And the two Victorias that make José Pariente know their stuff. After an overly ripe 2005, this vintage shows more of Pariente’s patented lemon, citrus and mango flavors. The feel of the wine is super solid and the finish is long and properly acidic. It’s a treat for fans of…
