Marqués de Murrieta 2003 Capellania Viura (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $26
Lucid yellow in the glass, yet lightly oxidized on the nose. A spacy, unique Viura. There’s dry apricot and peach pit flavors, and the mouthfeel and acidity are impeccable. A treat for explorers; eschews all blueprints for modern white wine.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Palacios Remondo 2006 Plácet Viura (Rioja)

  1. $30
The gold standard among Viura-based wines from Rioja has to be Placét from Palacios Remondo. Oak plays a big role here, and the nose wows with spice and cinnamon apple. There’s more ripe apple and spice in the mouth, along with excellent acidity and textural creaminess. A stately wine to drink with fish, veal and poultry.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Muga 2005 Viura (Rioja)

  1. $13
For a good price you get a lot of white wine here. Muga barrel ferments this Viura, so there’s popcorn and richness to the nose, but it’s not overwhelming. And in the mouth, the lemon, orange and tangerine flavors are flat-out lovely. Pour a glass of this with your next platter of sizzling garlic shrimp and you’ll be in heaven.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

CVNE 2006 Cune Monopole Viura (Rioja)

  1. $16
This wine shows Viura at its most elegant and expressive. It has weight, balance and body along with tangy lemon drop flavors. If you like pure but weighty citrus with a touch of mineral and brine, this has it. Better than most Viura by leaps and bounds.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

CVNE 2008 Cune Monopole Viura (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $15
Fresh, pure and minerally, with lime and peach aromas. This is a fine Viura that is lively, balanced and flavorful. The citrus and apple flavors ring true, and the mouthfeel isn’t raw or jumpy. Instead, a mineral and chalk element smooths it out, and overall it sings. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.  — M.S.  (10/1/2009)

Finca Nueva 2008 Viura (Rioja)

  1. $15
From Miguel Angel de Gregorio of Finca Allende, this is a nice, thorough, creamy white with aromas of white fruits, vanilla and straw. The palate has spiced peach, apple and pear flavors, and the finish is exceedingly creamy and deep. Shows elegance and adequate power, but needs to be drunk soon.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)
