Viognier

Viognier is a fragrant, powerful white grape grown in Languedoc-Roussillon and the Rhône Valley of France. It is the only grape allowed in Condrieu; elsewhere in the Rhône it is typically blended with other white grapes such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Rolle (or Vermentino), or blended as a small percentage into Côte Rôtie. It is also grown in other countries including Australia and the United States. Viognier is well-known for producing wines with distinct floral aromas and assertive stone fruit flavors. You can use Wine Enthusiast’s online Buying Guide to find the top-rated Viognier among our extensive Viognier wine reviews and easy-to-use database. Curtis 2010 Viognier (Santa Barbara County)

  1. $25
Annoyingly sweet, like chilled orange and lemon tea sweetened white sugar. There’s a nice edge of acidity, and lots of people will like it. But still, it isn’t really a dry table wine.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

With simple vanilla, lemon and lime flavors, this Viognier tastes a little sweet and sugary. It’s fortunately balanced by zippy acidity.  — S.H.  (9/1/2012)

Veritas 2011 Viognier (Monticello)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $22
This has concealed aromas of white peaches, tropical fruits and nuts. It’s medium bodied, with broad fruit flavors that lack individuality. It could make for a fine casual pairing with mild fishes like sole and tilapia.  — A.H.  (3/1/2013)

Sobon Estate 2000 Viognier (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $15
Some will enjoy the sugary flavors that accompany the flower and ripe tree-fruit flavors, but to me they’re off-putting. The flavors are so ripe that the excessively sweet mouthfeel makes them cloying.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)

DiamAndes 2011 de Uco Viognier (Uco Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Light lemon and melon aromas lead the nose, but the wine slips in the mouth, becoming creamy and flabby in constitution, with only mild citrus, papaya and bitterness for flavors.  — M.S.  (5/1/2013)

Peirano 2001 The Heritage Collection Viognier (Lodi)

  1. $15
Drinks dry and thin, with citrus and grass flavors that taste more like Sauvignon Blanc. Resembles that variety also with its high acidity and tart, peppery finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2003)
