1+1=3 NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

This oddly named label is doing pretty good Cava. This is a light, citrusy wine with a green, friendly soul. It features racy lemon-lime flavors and a grounded, clean mouthfeel. It’s like 87 octane at the pump; it gets the job done.

The nose kicks up ginger ale and a touch of lime, and that’s followed by apple and mild citrus flavors. The mouthfeel is good and the finish crisp, clean and full of vibrant acidity. A perfectly fine and pleasant cava, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Smooth and full of apple flavors and aromas. Runs a bit sweet and easy, with pear notes poking through. Finishes mild enough, with lemon-lime and a hint of mineral and toast. Imported by Grapes of Spain.

We’ve tried this nonvintage brut cava for three years running, and it has registered similarly each time. It’s a touch flat in terms of feel but the lemon-lime aromas and flavors are solid, if unspectacular. Overall, the wine is fine, with no major faults.

1+1=3 2005 Rosé Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)
Price
$16
Almost red in color, with sweet, juicy aromas of red fruits that bring to mind Beaujolais Nouveau. The palate is fairly unctuous for a rosado, with thick flavors of red apples, berry pie and sweet butter. For a fuller-bodied dry pink wine, it’s pretty hefty stuff.

1+1=3 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé (Penedès)

As in previous years, this wine just isn’t that fresh and pure. The nose is briney, and the palate follows suit. There’s some chunky grapefruit to ponder, but there’s unavoidable pickled, vegetal notes come finishing time.

The previous two years we did not find this wine to be worthy of a rating. This time, we rate it but note that it’s an almost-red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s sweet smelling, with fiery plum-skin flavors that evaporate along with the mouthfeel. Leaves a burn patch on the finish. Particular to the max.
