Abadía da Cova 2008 Barrica Mencía (Ribeira Sacra)

Smoky, rubbery and suggestive of bacon and toast on the nose. The palate is more crisp and snappy, with juicy flavors of red currant, cherry and spice. Acidity throughout yields a lemony finish, but it’s also chiseled and tight, which should please traditionalists who like their acidic bite.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Abadía da Cova 2007 Albariño (Ribeira Sacra)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $16
Interesting blanco from the inland Galician region of Ribeira Sacra. It’s Albariño with 15% Godello, and it’s ready to drink now. Aromas of pulpy peach and pineapple are nice, while the apple and lime flavors are fairly gentle and flush. Finishes with adequate freshness for an ’07, making it a no-qualms type of white wine.  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Abadía da Cova 2009 Albariño (Ribeira Sacra)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $22
Sweet and lightly floral on the nose, but also kind of generic and wan. The palate is wet, with hollow white fruit and apple flavors. There’s snap to the finish but not a lot of flavor other than simple citrus. A good quaffer but nothing more than that.  — M.S.  (4/1/2011)

Abadía da Cova 2006 Barrica Red (Ribeira Sacra)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $23
A rough, raw wine from Galicia that starts with a swirl of hard fruit aromas, heat and chemical. The palate is jacked up with berry fruit, tannic bite and power, and the finish is chewy and rugged. Packed with color and flavor but also aggression. Definitely not for everyone.  — M.S.  (6/1/2010)
