Abbazia Santa Anastasia 2005 Litra Cabernet Sauvignon (Sicilia)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $77
Probably the best expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cefalù area of Sicily (north of Palermo). This beautiful estate, crowned by an ancient stone abbey, has seen a few difficult years, but thankfully, the vines remain productive. Gorgeous, rich and round, Litra delivers black cherry and chocolate flavors and velvety tannins.  — M.L.  (4/1/2012)

Abbazia Santa Anastasia 2001 Passomaggio Red (Sicilia)

Quite the seductive modern-style wine, with deep black cherry aromas. It’s all fruit all the time on the palate, as blackberry and cherry vie for the front row. Rich, round and pretty, with lusty smoke and chocolate nuances toward the back end. It’s 80% Nero d’Avola and 20% Merlot.  — M.S.  (10/1/2003)

Abbazia Santa Anastasia 2002 Litra Cabernet Sauvignon (Sicilia)

  1. $70
Sandwiched between Cefalé's postcard perfect beaches and western Sicily's Madonie Mountains, this estate benefits from cool and hot temperature extremes and frequent winds. Its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is big and brawny, concentrated and inky with dark berry, charred meat and notes of deeply shaved cedar. Penetrating tannins add a dusty but firm quality.  — M.L.  (7/1/2006)

Abbazia Santa Anastasia 2003 Litra Cabernet Sauvignon (Sicilia)

  1. $70
A deep, brooding and penetrating wine with licorice, fruit preserves, red rose and toasted notes applied in lavish layers. You might want to keep this bottle in the cellar for a few more years to let the tightly-weaved tannins relax.  — M.L.  (7/1/2006)

Abbazia Santa Anastasia 1998 Montenero Nero d'Avola (Sicilia)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $34
This New Wave wine from Sicily is a blend of 70% Nero d'Avola, 20% Syrah and 10% Merlot. Aromas of vanilla buttercream, cedar, cinnamon and clove make one wonder if the fruit has been oaked into submission, but the bright cherry fruit shines on the palate and lingers through the tart, smooth finish. Soft enough to drink now, but should get better through at least…  — W.E.  (5/1/2002)

Abbazia Santa Anastasia 2002 Montenero Red (Sicilia)

  1. $40
Montenero is a Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend that underlines Sicily’s winemaking potential. It is ripe with pungent aromas of plum, cherry, wet earth, cigar box and slate; it’s soft and velvety in the mouth with dusty tannins. Drink now. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.  — M.L.  (7/1/2006)

This vintage of Passomaggio (a blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot) shows impressive strides in quality. From an estate with a beautiful sea-facing abbey built in the 1100s, the wine is modern, clean, plush and driven by ripe fruit and spice.  — M.L.  (4/1/2012)

Leathery and nice on the nose, with warm earth, light red fruit and mineral. Flavors of plum and berry jam mix with some graham cracker sweetness and grit, then a finish of strawberry flows forth.  — M.S.  (10/1/2003)
