Alion 1996 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $45
A spectacular modern-style wine from an excellent vintage. It’s deep as night, almost opaque, with giant blackberry, licorice, coffee and bacon aromas. It offers gorgeous flavors of cassis, blackberry, coffee and tobacco, and then finishes smooth and long, with mouth-coating dusty tannins. It deserves all the superlatives you could throw at it, and in three to five…  — W.E.  (8/1/2000)

Alion 2006 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $90
A lovely, modern-styled wine with clean, pure elegance on the nose, palate and finish. It opens with a blast of toast, and then unfolds with fresh black fruit flavors, smooth but lively tannins, and nice touches of heft, drive and simplicity. As good as Alion is, it’s not a complicated or overly complex wine. Best 2011–2017.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Alion 2004 Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $90
Big and modern is the path that Alion (owned by Vega Sicilia) follows. This vintage is excellent, the best since 2001. It offers sweet, ripe black fruit with solid but balanced tannins. Chocolate and leather give the finish sweetness and style, while the overall take is that this is a forceful but sexy wine. Best in a couple of years through 2014. A Europvin…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Alion 2000 Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $65
Leathery, earthy and entirely attractive; this is a wine that doesn’t seem to have come off an assembly line. The fruit is power-packed, dealing blackberry and plum along with chocolate and spice. In tasting this it’s hard to find any faults. Only the hard tannins stand out, calling for several years of cellar time. From Vega Sicilia. Drink in 2008.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Alion 2002 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $65
and pretty dense for an ’02, with sweet aromas of baked plums, blueberry, sandalwood and exotic spices. The palate is ripe and fairly pure, showing black cherry and dark plum flavors. Really good for an off year, with a touch of spice, chocolate and vanilla. Not a complicated RdD; best from 2008–2010.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Alion 1999 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $50
Bacon, sawdust and earth along with cassis and raspberry kick start this lively, acid-driven red. The palate offers tart plum and raspberry, all steered to a point by piercing, laser-beam acidity. Oak plays a prominent role throughout, especially on the finish. The gritty tannins, firm feel and strong acids call for a few years of cellaring.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)
