Alta Vista 2006 Single Vineyard Temis Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
This mighty Malbec opens with toasty oak, a pinch of sawdust and perfumed black fruit, vanilla and spice notes. The palate is lofty and rich, with beautiful berry and plum flavors. A smooth, sexy wine from the Uco Valley that shows that vineyard sourcing absolutely matters. Best wine from Alta Vista to date.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Alta Vista 2002 Alto Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $60
Begins with smoky bacon aromas that are followed by ripe black cherry and blackberry. Very plump and earthy, with a flush mouthfeel and lively acidity. Severely oaked, but that wood is of quality, so it yields vanilla and pepper rather than resin or sawdust. A blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Alta Vista 2005 Alto Red (Mendoza)

  1. $80
A bit warm and ripe at 15.5%, but the nose of prune, raisin and blackberry is rich and only gets better with airing. The palate features tobacco and savory black fruit, and the finish runs for miles with chocolate and licorice. Despite its weight, there appears to be ample acidity to protect the wine’s integrity. A blend of 75% Malbec and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.  — M.S.  (12/1/2008)

Alta Vista 2002 Premium Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
This wine captures all that is good about affordable Malbec. It’s endowed with ripe red and black fruits, a bit of violet on the nose, and just the right hint of leather. The palate is nice and sweet, with dry tannins and a dense finish. Sound like a balanced, ready-to-go red wine? It is.  — M.S.  (10/1/2004)

Alta Vista 2008 Atemporal Red (Mendoza)

  1. $25
Woody and smelling of sawdust early, this four-grape blend eases toward roasted berry, cassis, herbal plum and molten chocolate. It’s massive and structured, with a big-boned skeleton and heat on the leathery, roasted finish due to 15.5% alcohol. Big, fiery, saucy and lusty, but short on refinement and elegance.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Alta Vista 2005 Grande Reserve Terroir Selection Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $25
Generous in aromas, with touches of berry syrup, balsam wood and spice. On first blush the wine seems a little racy and sharp, but that driving acidity also causes the cherry and plum flavors to dance rather than sit lazily on the palate. Definitely on the money, with chocolate and more on the medium-length finish.  — M.S.  (12/1/2008)

Alta Vista 2002 Grande Reserve Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Almost floral, but with aromas of crushed minerals and tar. Airing reveals some coconut, but swirling unleashes an onslaught of balancing snappy red fruit. Definitely an oaky Malbec, with powerful finishing flavors of coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Alta Vista 2006 Single Vineyard Serenade Malbec (Luján de Cuyo)

  1. $50
Praise before criticism, and we like the wine’s stocky body, bright color and mouthfeel. In those categories, it’s a high flier. But there’s also a briny, pickled accent to the nose and accents of olive, rhubarb and herbaceousness. Interesting in that it differs greatly from Alta Vista’s Temis.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)
