They pulled out all the stops on this white Bordeaux-style Sauvignon Blanc. Sourced from a tiny, high-altitude vineyard and fermented in all new French oak, it’s layered and polished, with savory flavors of peaches, melons, figs, spearmint, smoky vanilla and honey, wrapped into a buttery, creamy texture.

Among the best bottlings of the vintage for this difficult and challenging varietal. Here, the winemaker has captured a rich streak of sweet cherry, coffee, and tobacco flavors. The texture and mouthful are a delight, packing weight but pure and supple. Long, long finish. This is a beautiful table wine.

“Sweet” is the operative word with this wine. In the nose, a certain baked berry pie note mixes with bacon and chocolate. The palate is full of bitter chocolate and sweet black cherry, and the finish is like a shot of vintage Port or Banyuls. —M.S.

Altamura has tackled this extremely difficult wine for years. They’ve settled on a style that’s soft and silky, with complex flavors of cherries, dates, plum skins, cocoa and pepper, and the weight of a Pinot Noir.
