A huge load with sophistication and style to go with tons of raw power. Tobacco, balsam wood and pure blackberry aromas are stylish and enticing. Shows body and structure on the palate along with black fruit, mocha, chocolate and toast flavors. Long and heavenly on the finish. Drink now through 2015.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Alto Moncayo 2008 Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

Gets out of the blocks with massive cedar, balsamic, tobacco and bold berry aromas. It’s super rich and thorough in the mouth, with excellent balance for a 16% ABV Garnacha. Flavors of roasted black fruits, coconut, coffee and mocha are giant; finishes even more oaky and barrel-driven, with vanilla, coconut and toast flavors. Drink now through the winter of 2013.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Smoky, peppery and tight on the nose, with leather and dark fruit aromas. The palate is chewy and dense, with syrupy richness and sweet flavors of ripe blackberry, toast, coffee, mocha and chocolate. Alto Moncayo 2007 Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

  1. $45
Excellent Garnacha in very modern dressing. The nose is sweet, candied, lightly baked and rich, with hints of prune, coconut and fine aged cheese. The palate is smooth and deep, with blackberry, molasses and licorice flavors. Sturdy and studly wine, with weight and only a pinch of heat and bite. Six hundred cases produced; drink now–2012.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Alto Moncayo 2007 Aquilon Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

  1. $161
Smoky, toasty and rich, with no shortage of power and fire in the hole. The palate is meaty and dense, with black fruit, black pepper and heat. But even with the unavoidable heat the wine shows balance along with attractive finishing flavors of fig, beef jerky, licorice and chocolate. Undeniably big and powerful at 16.5% alcohol. Drink soon, and with food…  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Alto Moncayo 2007 Veraton Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

  1. $28
Smoky, roasted and spicy on the nose, with berry fruit, licorice and black pepper scents. Definitely a warm, ripe, chunky wine with smooth blackberry, chocolate and mocha flavors. Big and with plenty of oak, but the integration and overall balance are commendable. Best now through 2012.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Alto Moncayo 2006 Aquilon Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

  1. $174
As mammoth wines go, this is rock-solid. Sixteen percent alcohol tells you that it’s strapping and ripe. But more than just being big and fiery, it’s pleasant and sophisticated. The nose offers mocha and raisin, and the palate delivers a feast of toasty, vanilla-edged berry and plum flavors. Fresh and balanced given the level of ripeness and oak treatment. Alto Moncayo 2006 Garnacha (Campo de Borja)

  1. $49
One of the biggest wines you’ll find from Spain. It starts with brawny, malty aromas of ultraripe berries, leather and earthy warmth. The palate is searing, with baked pie flavors, chocolate and heat. Finishes with even more licorice and mint, and at 16% this is one chewy red wine. Not for fans of elegant, lighter-framed reds. Only 600 cases made.  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)
