Alvear NV Solera 1927 Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
A rank well above most PX sweeties, with lush but fresh aromas of raisin and spice that are distinctly not syrupy or heavy. Feels thick, but there’s enough acidity to cut through the wine’s weight. Flavors of caramel and chocolate are ideal, and the finish is smooth, not heavy, and has bounce in its step. A beautiful PX any way you cut it.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

Alvear 2004 Añada Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  1. $18
Molasses, spice, chocolate and pure raisins define this as classic P.X. It’s syrupy but not too much so, with maple, cinnamon and brown sugar flavors. For a sweet and candied dessert wine, it has excellent balance and persistence. A star among many in this category; these wines are hard not to like.  — M.S.  (12/15/2007)

Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Maple, toffee and leather aromas combine nicely on a nutty, driving bouquet. The palate feels narrow and compact, with pointed flavors of saline, nuts and dried apricot. Finishes with power. Made from the Pedro Ximenez grape, not the more common Palomino.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Alvear 2005 Anada Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  1. $21
Classic aromas of cinnamon, raisin, prune and spice rise from the glass, while flavors of pure caramel, baked apple, chocolate and cinnamon take over. This is thick stuff, but with game acidity it stops short of being syrupy. And it’s forever long on the finish. Sweet, rich and balanced. What P.X. ought to be.  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Alvear NV Solera 1830 Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

A bit more easygoing than the PX wines of Jerez, as it delivers white raisin, milk chocolate and brown-sugar aromas and flavors. The palate is far from aggressive; in fact, it’s a little low in acidity, which results in a soft mouthfeel and a short finish. Excellent stuff; just not a classic.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Alvear 2003 Fino En Rama Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
Fino Sherry rarely has this kind of weight and complexity. It’s full of spunk, grab and length, and that’s probably due to the fact that it’s made from Pedro Ximenez grapes and not the more common Palomino. Likely marvelous with garlic shrimp or langostinos.  — M.S.  (12/15/2007)

Alvear 2008 de Añada Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  1. $23
Light brown and slightly translucent in color. Aromas lean toward raisin and prune, but there’s orange zest and molasses on the bouquet as well. Bores straight ahead on the palate, with sweet flavors of burnt brown sugar, caramel and prune. Satisfying and balanced even if it’s not overly complex.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

Alvear NV Asuncion Oloroso - 500 ml Pedro Ximénez (Montilla-Moriles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $29
Starts out closed and dense, but with airing it hits its stride. The palate is full and chunky, with creamy, sweet flavors of honey, toffee and nuts. Shows fine texture and acidity, with toast, raisin, fig and date notes on the finish. While this may be a "dry styled" wine from Andalusia, it’s more rich than dry.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)
