Amador Foothill Winery 2003 Katie's Cote Red (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $18
I like this blend of Syrah and Grenache despite its rustic nature. It’s tannic, dry and acidic, as far as you can get from today’s decadently soft red wines, but it’s hard to imagine anything better to set against grated cheese and olive oil. Bruschetta with an olive tapenade will be a sensation.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)

Amador Foothill Winery 2005 Sauvignon Blanc (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $12
A wondeful Fumé-type wine, especially at this price, that reminds me of Sancerre. Bone dry and crisp, it has a minerally taste of the earth underlying the grapefruit, lime and gardenia flavors, and an exceptionally long, spicy finish.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Amador Foothill Winery 2000 Grand Reserve Sangiovese (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $30
Always an interesting wine from this winery, this is a concentrated, intense wine, darkly hued, with big flavors. Smells like cured tobacco and blackberries, with a smoky, meaty note. Drinks bone dry, with dark berry flavors and thick, dusty tannins. A bit soft, but fascinating.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)

Amador Foothill Winery 2010 Rosato Sangiovese (Amador County)

  1. $12
Dark pink in color this rosato, or rosé of Sangiovese, is a delight, fruity and refreshing with some substance behind it and a touch of spice on the finish.  — V.B.  (11/1/2011)

Amador Foothill Winery 2006 Sauvignon Blanc (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $12
If you’re tired of all those flabby, lemonade-sweet Sauvignon Blancs, you’ll welcome this one. It’s refreshingly dry and crisp, a wine that really cleanses your palate. With 25% Sémillon, it shows very pure citrus and fig flavors, with a rich creaminess from partial barrel fermentation and aging on the lees.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Amador Foothill Winery 2004 Sauvignon Blanc (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

This winery often turns up real jewels. Fans of dry Sauvignon Blancs need to stock up on this one by the case. It has New Zealand-like gooseberries and citrus flavors and a long, rich, spicy finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)

Amador Foothill Winery 2007 Esola Vineyard Zinfandel (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $18
A very nicely priced Zin from 66-year-old, dry-farmed Sierra Foothills vines that has an intense spiciness right from the get-go and is appropriately tannic and meaty, big and classic for its historical roots. Plum, blackberry and tobacco predominate and already with four years of age, this one could age more.  — V.B.  (11/1/2011)

Amador Foothill Winery 2007 Estate Bottled Sangiovese (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $18
The Shenandoah Valley in California’s Sierra Foothills is definitely showing its propensity for Sangiovese here with longtime producer Amador Foothill Winery doing a nice job on this 2007, a wine with lots of dry, dusty tannins and mountain-grown structure that’s still got spice and will pair with Italian-inspired dishes with ease.  — V.B.  (11/1/2011)
