Amavi Cellars 2008 Les Collines Vineyard Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $34
Wine club only, single vineyard and pure varietal. This is tightly focused, with strong herbal and stem flavors dominating over wild berry and tart black fruits. This needs more bottle age and probably decanting. But what force and concentration!  — P.G.  (2/1/2011)

Amavi Cellars 2004 Sémillon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $20
A fine effort, 100% varietal, that showcases why this grape loves Washington soil. Pear and pineapple mix with citrus zest; there is a lively, refreshing acidity, and the barrels softened up rather than flavored the wine. Flavors are crystal clear, leesy and long-lasting.  — P.G.  (4/1/2006)

Amavi Cellars 2003 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $25
Smooth and smoky, with blueberry and black cherry fruit, smoked ham, light layers of coffee and buttered toast. Deceptive; it’s not a jammy or dense wine, but it’s got staying power and a silky, voluptuous mouthfeel.  — P.G.  (4/1/2006)

Amavi Cellars 2008 Sémillon (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
It’s a brilliant gold color, luscious, with spicy/toasty aromas and a hint of leesy character. The fruit is a complex mix of apricot, pineapple, and melon, with excellent acidity, and the Sauvignon Blanc gives it a melony streak.  — P.G.  (11/1/2009)

Amavi Cellars 2006 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $28
Still young, grapey and deep purple in color, this effusive Syrah opens with scents of violets and tart berries. It bounces into a tangle of berry and bright, high-acid fruits, also tasting a little briny and hinting at gamy smoked meat flavors that are waiting to blossom with a bit more bottle age. Vineyard sources are Seven Hills, Pepper Bridge and Les Collines.  — P.G.  (10/25/2008)

Amavi Cellars 2009 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley)

  1. $28
Fragrant with pretty berry scents, this compact wine rewards some hours of breathing time. The tangy fruit is complemented by streaks of herb, mineral and citrus peel, all woven together into a gently fading finish that adds a lick of dark chocolate.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Amavi Cellars 2005 Sémillon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $20
This exceptionally rich Sémillon is aged in neutral barrels. The fruit is firm and tart, showing a mix of pineapple and green citrus and berry. An underlying minerality adds texture and more firmness; the wine does not show excessive flesh, but is loaded with lovely acid and fruit, and a hint of toastiness in the finish. About one third comes from 25-year-old vines…  — P.G.  (5/1/2007)

Amavi Cellars 2002 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
A thrilling wine, firm and supple with a core of plush, dark fruit. Generous new oak adds layers of smoke and char, while the grapes provide extra nuances of smoked meats, licorice and mineral.  — P.G.  (11/15/2004)
