Amphora 2007 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

The most successful of Amphora’s new Pinots because of its richness and balance. Shows strong, forward flavors of berries, cherries and cola, liberally accented with sandalwood, and brightened with acidity. Yet there are elusive tugs of earthier, mushroomy notes. Delicious now, and probably at its best through 2011.

Rich and spicy, with an exuberant peacock’s tail of wild berry, cherry, mocha and sweet roasted coconut spreading across the palate. The lush fruit is wrapped in easy tannins.

Textbook “Pet” wine. Midnight black, dry, high in alcohol, tannic and rich in blackberry, plum, coffee and spice flavors. Will probably age forever.

Amphora 2007 Peters Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

A bit brittle, with big acidity and a tension of green fruit and cherries. Oak certainly helps, providing smoky vanilla and buttered cinnamon toast richness, but the stemmy flavors don’t go away.

Shows good varietal character, with cola, cherry and pomegranate flavors grounded with earthier notes of rhubarb and tobacco. Feels a bit soft in structure, lacking liveliness, so drink up now.

A big-boned, exuberant Zin, ripe and tannic, with flavors that bring to mind wild berries growing in briar patches. Very dry and a bit hot.

Amphora 2002 Jacob's Ridge Mounts Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Dry Creek Valley)
- $45
So ripe, it explodes, filling the mouth with intense black currant flavors. The fruit is sweet, but the wine is technically dry, and pretty tannic, too. A bit awkward now. Try holding for a few years.

Minty and floral at first, developing tart berry-cherry flavors with time in the glass. It’s bright and tangy, making it food friendly, with just enough tannin to cut through burgers and the like.
