Anapamu 1999 Syrah (Central Coast)
Editors' Choice
Price
$16
The plush, ripe mouthfeel delivers plenty of pleasure. Ripe, if darkly indistinct, fruit has coffee, smoke and gamy notes that add depth and complexity. Finishes long and dark, with attractive pepper shadings. Pushes all the right buttons, and delivers with style.

Anapamu 2001 Riesling (Monterey County)
Price
$16
Showing moderate body and made in a drier style, the wine offers a hint of earthiness that’s followed by pretty melon, peach, herb and citrus flavors. Crisp and clean on the finish, with a toasty, fruity hint at the end. More complex than many of the local Rieslings.

Anapamu 2001 Chardonnay (Monterey County)
Price
$16
From Gallo’s Central Coast brand, a lean, tart and minerally Chardonnay marked by flavors of flint and lime just veering into tart green apple. Extremely well made, and not without interest, but if big, blowsy Chards are your thing, look elsewhere.

Anapamu 2000 Syrah (Paso Robles)
Price
$20
A Gallo label, and a fine wine. Shows its warm origins in easily ripened fruit, big and rich in plums and blackberries, with soft tannins and acids. Yet it’s not a simple wine. It has depth and complexity, although a taste of raisins in the finish is bothersome.

Anapamu 2001 Pinot Noir (Monterey County)
Price
$16
At 21,000 cases, this might be the biggest production Pinot Noir in the county. This good, introductory-level Pinot has a silky mouthfeel and crisp, refined flavors of raspberry, cherry and beet. Don’t look for complexity. Just enjoy.

Anapamu 2000 Chardonnay (Monterey)
Price
$16
Smells oaky and sweet, tastes oaky and sweet. Other features include apple and peach flavors, a gingery spiciness and a rich, creamy mouthfeel. It’s also round and mellow in the mouth. —S.H.

Anapamu 2004 Chardonnay (Monterey County)
Price
$16
Lots of rich, ripe tropical fruit flavors in this creamy, brisk wine. Vanilla, buttered toast and woodspice from oak add to the impact. There’s nothing subtle about this bold Chardonnay.

Anapamu 2001 Syrah (Paso Robles)
Price
$20
A softly tannic wine with well-developed, jammy flavors of raspberries, cherries and blackberries. Made like an Aussie Shiraz, the wine is silky in the mouth.
