Animale 2009 Mourvèdre (Red Mountain)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
A first for Animale, and a terrific success, despite the almost 16% alcohol. Bursting with ripe berry flavors, this complex and flat-out delicious wine goes well beyond its highly-extracted black fruit. Wet rock, chalk and mineral extend and enhance the finish, with a chocolaty kiss at the very end.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Animale 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Mountain)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $28
One barrel made, from the original Kiona vines. Deeply concentrated cassis and raspberry fruit, tinged with bramble and brush, saturates the palate. This is Cabernet raw and wild, from old vines, with wonderful details of herbs and forest. A unique wine, with tart and astringent tannins, but excellent length.  — P.G.  (9/1/2011)

Animale 2008 Syrah (Yakima Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
This is 100% Syrah is quite ripe, with alcohol at 15.6%; yet not over-ripe or raisiny. Rather, the fruit is like a blackberry compote, concentrated and bursting with the essence of berries and a pleasing pastry note. Along with the tangy acidity and earthy tannins, it makes for a complex and compelling Syrah.  — P.G.  (9/1/2011)

Animale 2009 Barbera

  1. $24
This thick, purple-hued wine offers a rich mix of fruits, from brambly blackberry to plum and even a bit of spiced pear. The blend of ripe fruits and peppery spices is intriguing, and the flavors twist and twirl through a medium-long finish.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Animale 2008 Cabernet Franc (Yakima Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
This is all Cab Franc, aged in neutral barrels, and as pure an expression of the grape as it is made and grown in Washington as you will find. It has much of the herbal astringency of Carmenère, and could easily pass for a Chilean bottling of that grape.  — P.G.  (9/1/2011)

Animale 2008 Petite Sirah (Yakima Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
Very little Petite Sirah is grown in Washington. This is a fascinating expression of the grape, dark and tannic, deeply flavored but not at all sweet or sappy. Underbrush, wild berries, moist earth and pencil lead flavors cascade through the mouth, with green-tinged tannins rolling through the finish. Complex and unique.  — P.G.  (9/1/2011)

Animale 2009 Petit Verdot (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $28
Only one barrel was made with fruit from the Doc Stewart vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. The saturated color and a nose redolent of forest floor and dried leaves are attractive, but the fruit falls rather lightly on the palate, delivering strawberry-candy flavors. Balanced and a bit earthy.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)
