The inaugural wine from the joint venture between Piero Antinori and Haras de Pirque owner Eduardo Matte is, as might be expected, a rich, bruising, forceful red. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Carmenère and it exudes deep charcoal, smoke and black-fruit aromas. Next in line is a smooth but heady palate of cassis and herbal notes. The finish is oaky…

Bulky and big, with initial green oak that morphs into coffee and vanilla. Red fruit in the mouth, with good tannins that create a plush feel. Lots of wood and espresso on the finish, with persistence. Expect better in 2003 from this Antinori-Matte joint venture; the inaugural ’01 was excellent. Imported by Remy Cointreau USA.
