Archetype 2004 Old Vine Reserve Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $35
Stylized and excellent Shiraz. Briar and chili powder aromas are subtle; the wine is broad on the palate, with flavors of plum, raspberry and vanilla bean. Tannins are soft and approachable at first, but feel thick and wooly by the time you reach for a second glass. 1,000 cases produced. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.  — D.T.  (8/1/2006)

Archetype 2005 Shiraz (Barossa)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
Barossa doesn’t yield many Best Buys, but this one features aromatically complex notes of pepper and spice atop stylish blackberry and blueberry fruit. There’s some warmth, but also a pleasantly expansive mouthfeel. Drink now.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Archetype 2005 Old Vine Reserve Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $20
This wine poses an interesting contrast to the regular bottling, as it’s lower in alcohol and also tighter and more structured. Meat and savory notes are layered over tart berry flavors, finishing on a crisp note. This may age longer than Archetype’s regular 2005 Shiraz, but will it ever provide as much pleasure?  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Archetype 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz (Barossa)

  1. $14
This virtually 50-50 blend comes across as a bit simple and chunky, but well made. It’s sturdy enough to stand up to burgers and the like, offering modest cassis and berry fruit and a dusty finish.  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)
