This bottling is the richest, most complex and most accessible of this new winery’s four single-vineyard bottlings, a textbook example of luscious Russian River Pinot. Arista 2009 Woodruff Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains)

The oak sticks out now in the form of toast and sweet wood sap, but that’s because it hasn’t been integrated into this fine young wine. Give it 3–4 years to come around, by which time the barrel influence will equalize with the ripe raspberries, cherries, Dr. Pepper cola and red currants. Could be quite special around 2015.

Arista 2003 Mononi Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

Compared to the winery’s Toboni bottling, this wine is slightly more tannic, with more body, but the two wines are similar. It’s dominated by cherry and cranberry flavors, and feels soft and creamy. Seems likely to improve with a few years in the bottle.

Arista 2007 Toboni Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

This is a seriously good Pinot. It’s easy to imagine drinking it at a great restaurant, with a fabulous steak. The tannin-acid structure is just perfect, and the texture is silky. Yet tasted at the age 18 months, it’s a bit heavy in jammy cherries and raspberries, which suggests aging. Try holding off until 2011–2015.
