The oak sticks out now in the form of toast and sweet wood sap, but that’s because it hasn’t been integrated into this fine young wine. Give it 3–4 years to come around, by which time the barrel influence will equalize with the ripe raspberries, cherries, Dr. Pepper cola and red currants. This is a seriously good Pinot. It’s easy to imagine drinking it at a great restaurant, with a fabulous steak. The tannin-acid structure is just perfect, and the texture is silky. Yet tasted at the age 18 months, it’s a bit heavy in jammy cherries and raspberries, which suggests aging. Try holding off until 2011–2015.  — S.H.  (8/1/2009)
